iRacing

Ah, that was you! ;)

No worries, apologies at the time is enough :)

Later in that race someone tried to go off track to overtake me out of T1 so he didn't have to lift off, I closed the door so he couldn't rejoin the track alongside me and when he tried to punt me off he ended his race. I believe they call that comeuppance!

I ended up with a 7-minute repair in the pits and then an incident-free run about 5 laps down. I loved the week at Oulton Park, had some great races. COTA has far less appeal.

There is proper tyre wear, aerodynamic damage too and more down force will have a bigger impact on your tyre wear. Wheels can't fall off but you can certainly wreck your car to the point even 30 mins of repairs will not make it drivable, and the cosmetics will show you just how badly you wrecked it too.

I wasn't a fan of Oulton to be honest, very few passing places and the whole track is full of slight elevation changes which really don't feel like they suit this car as it's already quite a handful. COTA is a disappointing end to the season for me.

What's the extent of damage in game? If I corner too hard does my tyre lose grip etc, or fall off from being hit? Things like that.

As Muska points out there is tyre wear, but heat is your main enemy. If you push too hard in the corners you will overheat your tyres, they will lose grip and your car will gain lots of lovely understeer. :)

I'm really enjoying Oulton Park in the Ruf Track.

I did give it a whirl in the C Spec last week, but I'm still not comfortable in that car so it wasn't quite as enjoyable.

Picked up the RUF and Spa, amongst a few other tracks. First impressions of the C-Spec; wow, this thing is a boat. I'm really stuggling with consistency. Sometimes the brakes lock, sometimes I slow up 5m early. Sometimes the nose bites and hits the apex beautifully, other times it understeers like the Stena Line - especially in mid-speed corners like Fagnes and Pouhon. I downloaded a setup from the forums which helped a little, but still having issues.

Current PB of a 2:29.6 with an optimal of a 28.3, although I couldn't race it as I'm struggling to string 5 clean laps together. Eau Rouge is a lottery whether or not I come out the other side.

Does anyone have some tips for this car? I feel like I'm missing something.

Tomorrow morning I'll be running a hosted practice for me and the guys I'm running the 24hour with, you're welcome to join us, I'll gladly share the setups I've worked on and go over how I run the track etc.

Top tips for the C-Spec in my opinion, smooth is definitely faster. Slow in fast out has never been more true, push the tyres and it will understeer like a bitch. Make sure you give it a huge blip on downshift too. If you're locking up the front then put the BB back a little so it's more 50/50. Most setups for it will be a bit of a handful the first 2 laps so don't push too hard till the tyres are getting to their optimal (30psi)

Someone said to me, think of the engine in the back and imagine it pushes the car, not pulls.

I could talk a lot more about it, I race it exclusively this season.

Thanks for the invite Muska, unfortunately work gets in the way of that one :)

You're not wrong about smooth being faster in this car. Upon reviewing a couple of replays it seems I'm over-driving it on the way in to corners. Need to back it up some more before turn in. I got the optimal down to the 27s, but it still feels like there's a lot more I can extract.

It's a very easy car to overdrive, I guess that's part of the challenge for me.

You've got a bit more time to gain there still depending on weather and setup/fuel you're running.

well got my g27 and renewed membership.. had a little go last night think i need to get the settings right for wheel nearly snapped my arms off lol...

need to do 2 races for my mpr for my b licence promotion.

Ok, I found the source of my problems. Firstly, I moved the brake bias forwards a couple of clicks to help with locking the rear under heavy braking. Somewhere around 52.5% IIRC. Although I felt more in control under braking, it didn't really help laptimes as I was still struggling to hit consistent 2:28s. I was really frustrated by this point and about to give up for the night when I thought I'd see if there were any hosted sessions using this car which I could join and spectate the fast guys. There was, so I jumped in.

The only differences between this session and my offline testing were the weather (this was cooler, lower temperature, higher humidity and more wind) and that this was the endurance pits, not GP pits which I had been using. My first flying lap was a 2:26.0... WTF? Instantly 2.5 seconds quicker. Ended the session quickest with a time of 2:25.0, and an optimal of a 24.1, easily running consistent laps between 25.5-26.2.

I'm really confused. Obviously weather makes a difference, but nearly 4 seconds? This was the exact same car, with the exact same setup. Does the track rubber in with more cars? There were about 12 other cars, a mix of HPDs, FGTs and other C-Specs. Is there different grip levels in the different pit layouts of Spa?

I'm happy to at least have something resembling a competetive time, but I'd really like to understand the difference between these sessions.

Yeah, the difference in weather can be pretty huge. Last season i did the Skippy, final race was at COTA (yeah) and it was horrible, just pathetic, the car has no aero df, its all mechanical grip. For some reason i decided to do the league race which follows the official calendar, but used better conditions cos nobody liked the official weather. The difference was huge, i recall knocking seconds off instantly, and within 30min i'd taken 3sec off my best.
The delta bar going into the long back straight had me losing time coming out of the hairpin, and by the time i was at the end of the straight, i was -0.4... on a straight. Thats the difference you get from a little extra grip due to better weather.

I'd strongly advise against using anything other than correct weather, it'll only confuse matters and upset any potential to scrape tenths from testing. Theres no difference between empty servers and full servers, beside the obvious like traffic and slipstream, theres no marbles, no groove etc

Spunkey, the Qual weather is pretty good for us, if you're running those times is definitely competative, Qual for the Spa 24hour started today, are you registered for it?

We don't know what race weather will be yet but I'm hoping it will be close.

I didn't even know about it - I only started iRacing 3 weeks ago :)

Don't think I have the time to dedicate to it a 24 hour race at the moment, although I'd love to in the future with a bit more experience. Are you in a team that's racing it?

Finally managed a clean 2:24.4 this morning which I was happy with, so I recorded it. A little untidy in places and was the first flying lap with 8 laps of fuel in the tank, so I think 23s are possible.

What weather was that with? Is it the same as Qual for the 24hour?

20 degrees C
84% humidity
8mph SW Wind
Mostly Cloudy

Fastest I've seen in those conditions is 2:23.8 (That was not my time btw)

Yes, I'm racing in it, just running my Qual sessions now.
