iRacing

I did three races in the GT3 yesterday.

First one was in the bottom split and was a clean a whistle. No contact at the start and clean racing throughout.

Second race was in the middle split and I could tell from the warm up it was going to be carnage. I wasn't wrong, I gained 4 places in the first few seconds after contact a few rows ahead. Then more contact on the way down to the island bend meant I gained a few more. By the end of the first lap I was around 11th after starting 19th. On the second lap I got held up by a damage car that was all over the road who then ran me wide at the final corner, which cost me a few places.

Then the race settled down a bit and about half way through the race I come up to a car that's a lap down. He let me by just after the chicane and off I went. Except that the guy I lapped was the number 1 car, this meant I was having to drive my nuts off just to keep ahead, all the time I'm being hustled by a lapped car. So I asked him over voice chat to either go past and pull away or drop back and let me concentate on the cars in front and not spend most of the lap watching mirrors. After all I was car 22 running 14th and he's car 1 at least a lap down. He basically tells me to go faster and I should practice more so I don't hold him up.

In the end I make him pass me and I get back to my race, except he's not pulling away and in some corners I'm having to brake harder than normal to avoid hitting him. In decided to drop back more and he pulls away. A few laps latter I see him off the track with another car, apologising for taking someone out, but maintaining that it wasn't all his fault because he was quicker. In the end I think finished 10th, he was in the bottom 3 or 4, 8 laps down.

The third race was a similar affair with quicker, but lapped cars trying to unlap themselves into the tight chicane.

Some these guys should read the Tortoise and the Hare. Or at lest remember that to finish first, first you have to finish.

Season 4 will just be 6 weeks so that they can deploy quarterly builds that don't clash with holidays. So we will get 2 builds before the end of the year now instead of one.

Ford GT3 variant and the Commodore will be in the next update.

Well I managed a few laps in the new v8 at mid Ohio and I can only hopen the baseline setup sucks cause the car did not feel good at all.

seems to instapsin on high speed corners as well

Well it still was back online properly at 10 last night so I gave up.

Considering the premium price they charge, you'd think they'd have sorted these issues out when there's a new update. It's actually getting worse with each new build.

Had about 1 hour on iRacing with the DK2 and it is a great 1st implementation. I am definitely going to try this sort 6 week season with the rift only.

Loving it and makes the sim so much more enjoyable and realistic.

The new tyre model is perfect and as it should be, heavy at slow speeds, lightening up as you go faster.

What's the image quality like on the DK2, compared to a 1080p monitor?

No where as good, but good enough to race if you know your brake markers and the track layout.

Distant objects become confused with the screen door in the centre of the screen at distances > 300m, but then there are compromises to be had for the immersion factor and fun. Also I am finding it much easier to visualize the apexes and lines to take, of course that is the point of it.

A rough idea, but this picture is a crap example with brightness being much better.

Well I've managed to turn a few laps since the update and I'm liking the improvements.

I've tried the Mazda and the Skippy at the 24 Heures Du Fun tracks and the theres so much more feel than there was before. I used to hate the Skippy, but I feel as though I have loads more control. I can catch slides and even hold a drift now, whereas before I found it a real handful.

Even last seasons setups work in GT3 series.

Pat on the back for this update.

That's good to hear. I didn't realise they'd done anything to the Skippy, what are the changes?

I didn't either. Release notes don't mention any changes to the Skippy. But there are tire model improvements.

Tire Model

- The tire tread band yaw response has been improved, and is much better at low speeds, and when stopped. Now while at very low speeds the steering will feel heavy because you are trying to turn the tread but it is not able to roll enough to relax that motion. You should be able to feel the difference in higher and lower pressures much more at low speeds now. The tire will feel different even up to 80 mph, where the new low speed code approaches the old model.

I haven't driven it for ages, so that might have some bearing, but I thought I'd give it a go because I might do a few races this week as there's no IR or SR to loose. So I can have a blast in cars I don't normally drive.

I was just surprised at how much more control I felt I had compared to previous attempts at driving it.

It's to all cars, the tyre model changed slightly to reflect slow moving speed a little more realistically and less like ice!

I'm impressed too, lots of small but nice changes. Had a great race in a 24hours of fun, mixed field, stock cars, mx5, gt500 and spec ford, 25 laps of watkins Glenn!
