Iran why...

21 Jan 2026 — FCDO advises against all travel to Iran. If you are a British national already in Iran, either resident or visitor, carefully consider your presence there.

Something about playing stupid games and winning stupid prizes.

Not really sure what their son is expecting the UK government to do? Took them forever to try and secure a release of nazanin.

I pray there is a resolution for them and they can get out of their mess quickly. Why you would put yourself in the position where the likelihood of something bad happening is beyond me. Danger tourism should come with a caveat that if you go, you are on your own.

Exactly this. I appreciate it's a very distressing event, but they chose to go travel through Iran and, unfortunately, there was always a high chance something like this would happen.

It does frustrate me how the media frame it. Yes, it's a sob story, but they should really try and make it clear somewhere in the piece that the UK Govt official guidance was not to travel through Iran! Also, we bang on about wanting to live in a 'common sense society' where we all have individual freedom to do what we want without state interference, but alas, as soon as their individual choice goes wrong, they then whine to the media that the state is not doing enough to help them fix their mistake.

media has been quiet on any social media posting the couple had potentially made - and was seen by authorities.

Still odd that as bbc/doucet constantly repeats - we can report from iran if we don't publish in BBC persian section, with similar constraint on other journalists,
khomeni must realise the reports won't be favoursable and they'll have difficulty preventing any viewing by the populus (as would reporting from sanctioned NK )

You're never going to stop people who enjoy living life on the edge. If you're not wired that way, it can be hard to wrap your head around, and while they look very stupid now they've been imprisoned, I can still have sympathy for them.

10 years just for being there. When is Trump going to do the world the favour he has been talking about

He's certainly building up to it, there are currently two strike groups near Iran, and those combined with airbase assets in range, the US has around 300 aircraft ready to go when Trump gives the go ahead. In just the last 24 hours another 50 F-35's and F-16's arrived in the area at airbases and another 10 refuelling tankers are on route from the US.

In addition to the two aircraft carriers and airbases, there are 11 missile destroyers and a few submarines as well. It's the largest build up of military assets in the middle east by the US since 2003

Quite sadly there are people on here who would do the opposite to what the Government advises them to do.
The only sympathy I have is for their loved ones.

One thing this thread proves is that not one of us believes that they are spies for the uk. Seems the perfect choice for spies in that case
If Iran wasn't too clueed up

No, a middle aged couple on a motorbike. What in common would they have with a misogynistic male with tendencies to violence and driving a late model Aston?
