Iranian hackers crack Windows Vista, sell it on street for $8 a copy

Hinckley > Iran.
Was just up town in my mates shop and some dude offered me a copy for 2 quid.
I politely declined as i am waiting for the drivers to catch up and of course Never use cracked or pirated copys.

I bought a laptop last week which says i can get an express upgrade to vista YAY

until i went to the site and they wanted 99 Euros for vista basic upgrade!!!

And YES it would be an OEM version as the version currently installed is OEM.

Hmm 54+ VAT from OC or 99 Euros for an "upgrade".

I find this ridiculous.

:(

Bad news people hacking it. If you want to stop microsofts monopoly invent a better version of direct X. The only people i see doing this would be amd or intel.

If they two got together I'm sure they could create a monster gaming PC with a "gaming" os which would be very popular.

The I woke up and smelled the coffee (or is it smelt?)

If it comes with XP Home then you usually have to pay for an upgrade - XP MCE or XP Pro is free (depending on version)

Don't get Vista Basic though as it's very basic - get the Home Premium or Business instead

something thats needs constant updates and fixes i didn't say i wouldn't use it, therefore IMHO it MUST be buggy regardless or not if other software bodges it up.

So you receive free updates to fix issues, also you didn't seem to answer my question about how many bugs you've found in Vista that aren't driver related, there is no way you can hold MS accountable for certain vendors not being able to write drivers for their own products.

it was

there was the infamous "devil's 0wn" cracker group. Who took a photo outside the XP Countdown timer at redmond, with an XP Corp CD rom in one hand, and a valid CD key (the infamous devil's 0wn CD key, used by just about all of the first hacked versions of XP) with 23 days still remaining on the countdown timer
The amount of people I know that know at least half of that key... Including me! lol

Of course I have a legit OEM copy of Vista now that I have a job and can afford a legitimate OS! Haha

Most of the people that bitch about MS products have never bough "any" software in the life, they think it's free and comes from their USENET client or P2P connection!

XP came out in 2001 so for lots of peole they paid £200 (or whatever it was) and they've had 6 years of a pretty decent OS with free upgrades and service packs.

Not bad IMHO!

That was exactly what I thought as I was digging around for my debit card in January.

People moaning about the price does annoy me.

The OEM version of ultimate from here was about £140. Say you have it for 5 years, thats what, £29 and some change a year?

Not to mention that yes they do constantly add updates and fix new security exploits, And that is all covered under the initial charge.

Vista runs ABSOLUTELY FINE now. The only thing I can't get working is my webcam. And that is a driver issue.

I just wonder how many of the anti-MS fanboys know just how open Apple is to security exploits as well?

Its quite simple. If Apple and MS were in reversed positions, the Apple OS would be hacked to crap. The amount of people I know who go "Oh Bill gates is a d1ck" and I say why? They give me some BS reason and then go play a game on their hacked copy of xp

It really isnt MS fault that other people suck at getting market share and making an OS that can commercially compete with theirs.

I feel compelled to point out there that the way MS have got such an insane market share is that they do a deal with Dell/HP/other OEMs to the effect that if they ship PCs with other (ie Non-MS) operating systems, the price that they have to pay for Windows licences goes up.

So to keep profits high, they'll only sell MS operating systems.

OSX is basically Net BSD, Apple were sensible enought to choose a pretty secure kernel etc for OSX!

yeah if you never upgrade your pc in 5 years that is.

This is OC forums where people upgrade all the time.

To upgrade properly you need a retail version. Replace 140 with 352 :D still a bargain at 70 nicker per year though ?

home premium upgrade is £130
Vista Ultimate upgrade is £230

Xp Pro Upgrade is £160
XP Home Upgrade is £90

but then, vista ultimate extra's is effectively the old microsoft Plus! packs, and will only be available to owners of vista Ultimate. Microsoft have a lot planned for vista ultimate. Its parallel doesnt really exist in XP.

So Home premium sits neatly inbetween Xp Pro and Home, and considering Xp Home has windows Media Centre components, and some components of Xp pro on it, i think the Home premium justifies the £30 extra

trouble is, when comparing prices they tend to compare XP with Vista ultimate. but as ive already stated. Vista ultimate is taking the product in a new direction. The extra £100 apart from adding some unique features, and all the business ones, appears to be getting you a lot of future developement for the "Ultimate extras" So i think the pricing is reasonable myself.
