IRC - Explain

Sure does bring back memories. The entire Enemy Territory scene was pretty much based on IRC for clans to organise ladders, matches, scrims and the like. Met (literally) some awesome people through it over the years.

No reason for me to use it anymore though, all the qnet channels I used to frequent are likely dead now. Shame...

I feel your pain.

CAN I GET A NET SPLIT OVER HERE

I used to play on a #trivia channel back in 2003, was sort of like hangman where you have to type the missing word, and each letter is filled in that is correct, so the fastest to spell it correctly gets the points, which are also based on how quickly you get the answer.

Was pretty fun playing against 30 other people at once.

It's oudated. Nobody uses it any more.

It was popular at a point because it was the original P2P. But it's been redundant for a long time now.

Forget about it and move on.
Couldn't be wrong. It's as still as popular as ever. Hell our old clan channel on Quakenet is still as active as it was back in 1998 during the Quake/HL DM/CS days. It is hugely valuable tool in realtime game discussions.

Been using it every day to stay and touch with my mates for years.

Anyone know any good IRC lists/search engines?

you're mistankanly thinking that IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat and that you can just pop onto it and find people to chat to like an internet chat room.

Its not.

Its a geek hangout.

You'll find channels for counterstrike, and plenty of other online multiplayer games. But its not a pop on and randomly connect to somewhere to start talking to people kind of experience.

Join the OcUK channel on Quakenet, should be like minded people on there you can chat with.

I miss the days of IRC - back when I was into gaming, having an IRC channel where your whole clan idled and chatted with people dropping in gave a real sense of community.

IRC is still widely used within the PC gaming community. Loads of matches and pick-up games (PUGs) get arranged through there, and I still hang with my clan on it occasionally. So those days are still here, and given the right game you should be able to drop right back into it.

I never stopped using it, but people generally don't understand how it works though, they expect to drop in and join a conversation immediately and if nobody talks they leave.

In Jersey they started up a regular lan event with irc channel, most of the people who attend are <20, when they first starting coming into the channel, saying "Hello?" and about 30 seconds later leaving the channel.
Now they idle there like the rest of us and understand it's pretty much like a real-time forum with the topic being whatever is currently being talked about!

It's like being able to talk with friends text based instantly, without having to physcially call them up or arrange some sort of conference, it's just there...
My machine is on 24/7 connected to it, if I had a smart phone it probably would be too (just like people do on social sites).

You people who still use it, what clients do you use? I'm looking for a free one and i just tried chatzilla which seemed fine until i closed my FF browising window, then if i open a new one it hangs for ages each time i load a new page.

If you work in a technical job you need IRC. Linux VM + Screen + IRSSI = #WINNING

Mine was odd, i was on it quite early yet had a number longer than people newer to it than me for some reason :(
