Is 144hz worth the upgrade?

Hubby has a 144hz TN monitor with freesync and it is lovely and smooth! I have a Dell IPS 60hz, better colours but lower response time, I have not found that it has hindered my gaming in any way though. The 144hz is lovely, I am jealous! Down the line I will upgrade to a 144hz but would pick an IPS panel - graphic artist as well as a gamer. When I bought my Dell I don't think high refresh rate IPS's were in my price range.

this is so not true, my 980 was happy running games at 1440p

100% agreed, the statement just isn't true.

My wife has my old IPS panel, she doesn't notice the input lag much if at all and we play Overwatch together daily. However, she is now fully saving for 144hz and a GPU upgrade (running a 1060 for 1440p games isn't ideal) as the difference is night and day.

Really depends what games your running, as the op said rocket league that would be fine, but something like destiny 2 or the division would struggle with games at 1440, iirc its approximately a 40% fps drop going from 1080 to 1440, so a quick rough calculation would be that your games need to run at 240 fps on a 1080p monitor to get 144 at 1440, (240/100*60=144) if sticking with the same graphics card. But as I said it will depend almost entirely on the game, some of the more demanding titles might be ok with a few minor details turned down that would be more than compensated for by the resolution increase, & ofc this is only if you want it running at max refresh rate all the time.

Atm I really want to upgrade to a 1440 (on 1080p with 1070gtx atm), but couldnt live with the fps drop personally, but thats my personal taste, I am though using a 120hz monitor & could never go back to 60 fps, for reference my 1070 give me about 90fps average in the division & about 70 average in destiny 2, & i do find those games arent as smooth as others that run at max refresh.

For reference, I run a 1440p 144hz monitor (which I love btw) on a 980ti, and it's rare that I'm pushing 144 fps into it. Generally I'm getting 70s to 90s for most modern titles. That said, I was playing bf5 maxed out, and thought it didn't feel so smooth. Checked my fps and frame times and I was getting "only" in the 60s, so you really do get spoilt by it.

Something worth mentioning here: web browsing (scrolling pages especially) and general desktop use is also way nicer at 144hz so you will get a benefit outside of games. I never realised how hard it was to read text when scrolling a Web page at 60hz until I had a 144hz display

PS: your 2500k is quite long in the tooth now. Still a good chip, but I'd be looking to see what AMDs new chips bring in the new year if I were you (or else bung a 3770k in there as a stop gap). At high framerates cpu starts to become a factor.

I have a 120hz 21:9 monitor at 3440 x 1440

To be fair I was awful at FPS games at 60hz, and I still seem to be the same at 120hz.

Sure it seems smoother, but with the RPGs that I tend to divulge in, I don't really feel the benefit.

For reference I am running a 1080ti FE with the EVGA Hybrid Cooler with an overclock of of 200mhz on the core and 100mhz on the memory.

I could never use 60hz, unbearable.

I hear this a lot. And I am not sure if its user specific or related to the games I play, but the jaw dropping difference between 60 and 120hz I just havent seen.

Sure its there.....but its hasnt changed my world. The same with Gsync.

My hubby says this now he has had his 144hz for over a year. Using my 60hz screen makes him sick... Good method of keeping him off my pc at least :p

Another reason I have not yet upgraded, I need to use 60hz at work and worried the 144hz at home would spoil me!

Just because you cannot maintain 144fps doesnt mean you wont be benefitting from a 144hz panel. Even when you are gaming at around 90fps you still see a fair improvement.

Got my new 144hz monitor arriving today - just a shame my Vega 56 is on backorder so I'll be using it with my existing 970 for a few weeks first!

i'd be worried about that CPU now tbh. you could probably see a 10-20% improvement by upgrading to a modern i5.

also PUBG you will never get 144 fps regardless of settings it's a terrible game. would need a 2080ti

Recently switched from a 1080P 60Hz to 1440P 144Hz Freesync monitor and it is a noticeable improvement. Easier on the eye (even in Windows) and smoother. I was a bit concerned about about having to use higher resolutions as my rig isn't the most powerful, but it's coping fine. Given the fact that I no longer have to cap at 60FPS/enable V-Sync, and that I no longer have to run AA in all cases, my FPS in games is actually better, or at least, no worse.

Yeah I know it's a bit long in the tooth now but having just splurged north of £650 on a monitor and GPU the CPU upgrade has had to be put on the back-burner for now!

Out of interest, what CPU would be a decent improvement from my 2500K and will my motherboard support a better chip?

nope you will need a motherboard and new RAM.

anything from the past 2-3 years should be fine. a 7600K can be overclocked to 5ghz once delidded, etc.

that is the problem these days they crap intel use on them isn't any good and they overheat as a result.
