is 16gb ram worth it,is it poss

What use could you possibly have, PC's can only get so fast, it's still going to take 30 seconds to boot and ages to do a file transfer on a standard Hard Drive. How much performance boost could you get increasing ram from 8 to 16, I highly doubt it's twice as fast

Just because you don't use 16GB doesn't mean anyone else doesn't use it either. I could bet you've no need for a mass spectrometer, doesn't stop certain other people needing one.

Lol I had to google "mass spectrometer" just to find out what it was.

I guess for stuff like graphic design when you're dealing with RAW files that would be ram intensive, but for a home computer just for gaming and video encoding, I definitely couldn't justify more than 8GB, with iTunes, MS Office, Photoshop and Firefox open, my PC only uses 2GB, I'm trying to figure out a way to make use of the extra ram, to make my PC was quick as possible

Ram wont make your computer faster if you not using all the ram you had in it before

if you had 4gb, but only use 2gb of it, and upgraded to 8gb, your machine wont be any faster because you werent maxing out the 4gb before

also, not everyone on here only uses their machine for light web browsing and word processing ;)

I have just ordered a 12Gb DDR3 kit to hopefully boost my RAM to 18Gb.
Doing digital painting in CS4 I am easily hitting the 6Gb cap. 5000x5000 300dpi 10+ layers :S

I hope I can maintain my overclock :)

I would reccomend getting some kind of system usage monitor (one that keeps data rather than one that shows the usage at that exact time) because I rarely use more than 3/4 even hd video editing

I have 4gb of 1600 G rips in my system and just bought another 8gb cause it was only £35 inc delivery. I know people say 8gb is not really needed in a system but my PC does seem to boot up a bit quicker than it did before so it was worth it for me :D

You'll be fine using all 4 slots assuming the motherboard supports 4GB per slot.
It shouldn't really be any less stable and it would help with video editing.

To be fair unless he's doing some real heavy stuff 8GB RAM (2x4) should be more than enough. You could always stick the other pair in at a later date.

I edit HD footage and use 3d applications and have never ran out of memory so far and I'm using 6GB.

I'm using 12GB Ram at 1600Mhz and whilst I don't run out of ram I hardly expect 6GB to edit HD footage seamlessly and smooth. I just wanted to point it depends what element of 3D modelling your doing which deters the amount of ram you need and the same with HD footage, editing full HD seamless requires allot more then you think.

8GB is more then enough for casual gaming and general PC use, to be honest overblown but the cost of ram these days why the hell not eh?

The longer you use your PC, the fastest it gets with more memory. Most OS caches disk in RAM, and the more RAM, the more cache.
So even if you only use 2GB of "real" ram, but use many apps like browsers etc over a day (or several days) it will fill up 8GB, or even 16GB of cache and it will all go faster and faster.
