Is 360 Dying?

I switched my 360 on earlier and the power light within the RoL is constantly flashing, the dashboard also says the tray is opening. If I try to eject the disc using the button on the console, the drive half ejects before quickly shutting again, the dashboard then says the disc is being read before returning to 'opening'. I've been able to get a couple of games working but the drive doesn't 'sound right' and the games skip.

Does it sound like it's on its way out? If it is, should I wait for the 3 lights of doom or return it a.s.a.p? I've only had it since early January.

I had that problem and used the rubber band method to fix it. Basically your laser is moving too far up its arm. (Sounds similar to mine anyway)

I also fixed my 3 red lights of barstewards with a drill and some bolts, but that's another story.

Check xbox scene forums for fixes, although if you are still in warrenty it'll probably be easier to just take it back.

Cheers for the replies.

I have absolutely no idea what was up with it. Switched it on earlier today to check it prior to taking it back and before I knew it I'd missed most of the day. ;) No blinking lights, no crashes, just hours of quality gaming. *Bonus!* Still, I'll keep my eye on it from now on.

Drill & bolts?

Do tell

Well it keeps the main board rigid, the 3 Red lights was occuring on mine due to it getting hot and warping the board, as the clamps on the underside have too much give in them, thus having bad contacts with various chips or something... I forget tbh, bad design flaw anyway. Works fine since.

Basically a trip to B&Q for some washers and bolts and the use of a drill with 4/5 mm bits. You can find it all here (and more) if you want to read about it.

It's known as X-clamp replacement.

Must say it was fun taking a drill to the 360. :D

Update:

My 360 died on Friday, it wouldn't play discs at all and kept trying to spit the drive out with an awful grinding noise, I'm surprised none of the discs have been scratched. Finally got a replacement yesterday after waiting for the store to restock, only for the new one to succumb to 3 lights of doom within 24 hours, so now on my third since January. Noticed all had a manufacturing date sometime in October '06, including the latest. Maybe a bad batch?

This is whats putting me off getting a 360. Its quite shocking to see that even the newest batch of 360's are still faulting so much. I've never had a console fail on me.

Anyone know if the new revision will be out later this year? Hopefully it will as I plan to get one this Xmas.

I agree, it's like no peace of mind. say you plan to enjoy your 360 over the long weekend and first thing you found on bank holiday monday morning is the 3 rings of death. will really mess up your day.

Its why I have two. :D Seriously.

I'm on my 5th as I've said before.

Would I go over to the playstation 3? Well no, the 360 is the better console with the better games at the moment, so wouldn't even contemplate it.

i just had a similer problum i gave my 360 that ive owned since dec 06 to my older sister to use , anyways she was whaching a queen dvd on it and it then flat out stop playing and the dvd could not be removed via pressing the button on the console or via the dashboard even though the dash board was saying it was being ejected , the manul realsese worked but the console no longer wants the read the dvd , she not tryed a game or anthour dvd yet (im in my uni house atm so i can't) so looks like mines duffed up as well was working fine for 6months then this happened :( off to microsoft it gose when im back there at the weekend

forgot to mention, it ate my 2 day old copy of crackdown too on the weekend.... luckily I was able to get it swapped at *music store* without too much fuss at all. So fair play to them.

Yeah my nephew just had his replacement give up. Its now all of one day old. The one he had since xmas ate discs and destroyed pro evo. It was replaced yesterday for a brand new console and disc.

The new one refuses to play anything.

I'm honestly at the point now where I couldn't recommend the 360 to anyone, better games or not. Its just not worth the grief.

Shoddy build quality will have cost MS this console generation and there isnt a hope in hell I will be an early adopter to their next system.
