is 6 cores overkill for a first build?

seems that amd is the way to go for a more price conscious consumer am i right in saying??

Yeah,

Its slower than I7 hence the price.

930 i7 beats the the X6 @ 4ghz even though it has two less physical cores.:p

You have the budget I would wait for sandy bridge coming soon.

The AMD 6 core is already slower than current intel tech so if you want it to last without upgrades for 3 yrs then its the wrong choice.

No it doesn't

If the 6 cores AMD's ere faster than my i7 920 running @ 4ghz I would be running one in a flash.

They aren't so I'm not.
just because u overclock doesn't mean everybody wants to overclock.

stock for stock the x6 is faster...

the OP as never said he'll be overclocking

people should compare cpus stock for stock . overclocking is a bonus

Well I paid around £600 for my new build and I wouldn't complain as it's great and will do everything I need for a while. The 1055T is a nice chip, and I currently have it stable at 3.8Ghz and with some more tweaking will probably get it stable @ 4 too.

It's great for rendering, great for multitasking and great for games. The 1055T combined with 2 5770's gives me around 100 FPS on BFBC2 and over 100 on TF2, and GTA IV now plays smooth enough, so I'm glad I went with this build as it does everything I need it to do and more.

Go for the amd hex core/quad, if you look at the bench marks it shows that the difference between an i7 and a hex core is minimal in gaming. As your looking to game i would suggest the cheaper option, and get a 1055T.

You dont need triple channel ram for gaming. If you want to look for a cheaper option then get a phenom II quad.

serious tho. if u only game, watch films and well surf the web, u only need a quad like a 955. which future games will use all 4 cores.

games are more gpu limited.
