is a move from a Q6600 to a Q9450 worth it for 3D rendering?

One interesting detail from that Vegas forum is a referance render-test,
the fastest Dual Quad- Xeon is at 52 seconds and the best i7 based is
at 54 seconds !!!!! and this i7 was not even overclocked on the edge,
thats how I remember the figures at leats, they are almost on par,...

EDIT seems like the final figures are now 51 seconds for the 3 Ghz dual
quad xeon 7500 USD build, while a i7 at 3.6 Ghz does it in 52 seconds !!

CLICKY CLICKY

I was tempted to go Q9xxx recently but I felt that it wasn't worth it at all, the next upgrade will be an i7. If memory price is cheaper by then (and dollar rate better, I go to US frequently), I might go excessive and get 24gb (!) RAM....

For a rendering rig not so much, no. Wait and see what the vanilla P6T comes in at, has all the functionality. Including SLi, why limit your options for a few quid, might help resale as well.

who needs sli for a render rig anyway

Just my words, ironically video-editing need the least video-power, vegas it
doesnt matter what card more or less, some of the liquid stuff did have use
of a modest ATI card, but thats all, unless off-course going adobe with one
of the dedicated matrox-systems, I will do with some passive 2600XT stuff,
for the audio DAW I just grabed THIS one to play with, aproxx 10 w only

Hey guys, looks like I will be taking the step to i7 after all - managed to find someone to buy my motherboard, CPU and RAM all together so it should lessen the blow for the money im about to spend!

I'll be back soon with performance comparisons
