So the house Im in has a phone line and has cables running all over the house and the guy who pays for it has his router at the end of an extension lead and god knows where that plugs in :/

There is a second line in the house but its been deactivated for over a year and Id have to pay the £122 odd to get it turned back on.

What I wanna know is, will this line be completely isolated from the mess of cables downstairs?

If the old line has been in use before, you shouldn't have to pay the reconnection fee. I certainly didn't when I moved into my flat 18 months ago when the previous tenants had been using Virgin.

Yeah, if the line has been off for less than 6 months its free to reconnect :/ but if its been off for considerably longer, they actually disconnect the line from the exchange or some crap so they have to send an engineer out to the exchange to get it back on :|

You can argue away this fee if you can be bothered with lots of calls to BT to complain.

What argument do I use? lol 'I cant be arsed to pay £122' doesnt seem too good as far as arguments go :(

I've gotten out of paying the fee 3 times. You need to argue that there's already a socket in the house and that the line doesn't need anything more than activation at the exchange. I used the argument that as no work needed to be done at my premises, they had no right to charge me.

Whether or not I'm right about their right to charge me, I've managed to get the connection fee cancelled in every case so far.

Might try that then :P

Maybe if I say that if I have to pay the activation, Im going with Virgin they might change their mind lol.

Don't phone BT, phone the post office. They'll re-activate the line for free and put you onto a 1 month contract with them.

If you don't like the service you can move to a new provider (Sky, BT etc) after the one month.

Post office you say eh...

Is that some deal theyve got on at the moment? Any links to any info? :D

I moved to a house with no line, phoned up talk talk as thats who I was with in the old house asking for a new line. They directed me to the post office as the guy said that if I called BT I would have to pay to get the line set up (£120 i think) and take a 12 month contract with BT.

post office we're much more helpful IMO

Edit: I just phoned the post office main number off the website
