is anyone *still* on 56k?

I upgraded the mrs' grandparents to broadband.

They were on 56k PAYG

Now they're on 8Mb, and I'm stuck on 1.5Mb which is a joke.

My grandfather still uses dial-up, and my 2Mbps ADSL connection is refusing to download at anything faster that 3.6kbps so technically I am as well...

Oh boy, just thinking about 56k....

It would render about 80% of what I do on the net either impossible or impractically slow.

I know nobody still on it but there must be plenty of occasional users still dialling up

I remember trying to download a demo which was 90mb and could never do it without the net timing out. Didnt help that it took 6+ hrs. Its amazing to think I would hate to be on 512k atm never mind 56k

Conversely I reckon around 80% of what I do on the net nowadays could be done on a modem. I no longer game competitively so apart from streaming video there is very little I couldn't do on a slower connection.

Of course, I'd need a dedicated line and it would be frustrating to have slow browsing while downloading.

I recently repaired a machine for a lady friend who was running Windows 98 with PAYG 56k and supplied a brand new machine to a writer friend who has a 56k PAYG connection; He also writes longhand ..... go figure.

He wanted me to put the new machine onto the 56k connection but I refused and told him to get broadband; he goes live on the 2nd of April.

Hrm, I used my home cisco lab to throttle down to 64K a while ago and it was painful. No thanks :D

I do remember the days of being on Direct Connection 56K and it was awesome at the time. Amazing how you take things for granted as technology evolves.

56k was NEVER amazing

i work for a company that sells traffic counters, they connect to their counters via telemetry over the phone / mobile lines ..... using a modem!

i thought i had heard the last of evil dialup squarks... now i hear it dozens of times a day
