Is Crysis a reason to upgrade?

Hmmm... thinking about this question.

Is this a reason to spend £600 to £1000 on a new computer? Probably not. As much as I enjoyed the game, I wouldn't recommend upgrading just for this game. If there are other games you want to play as well Bioshock, CoD4 then it’s definitely a game you should put on your list to play.

But if you just want the latest and greatest graphics no matter the cost, this is the game for you.
 
Crysis is not the reason to upgrade but this is 08 and big things are coming.

To name just a few, this will start to push the need to progress and move onto the next gen!
 
Crysis is a game? :O (shock) I always thought it was some device to see how good your PC was!

On a serious note - depends how much you play, and how rich you are. I'm upgrading my PC now because the games I currently play run crap with what I'm on now. My better rig will make them run much better and stop me getting sea sick when my FPS falls out my pants and the game laughs at my crying computer.

You'll find that the GTS512 is the fastest non Crossfire/SLi card you can play Crysis on due to its massive shader power.

At 800 core, and your well clocked Quad you should be pushing 55fps easy at 1280x1024 all High no AA.

Bung it on 1680x1050 all High no AA and it should still be in the 40's, more than playable. Then go into your configs and turn on POM and Sunshafts and tada sweet graphics and easily enough FPS to be enjoyable.

If you are playing it and it is feeling 'sluggish' turn off Motion Blur, its one of those marmite options, for some people it makes the game feel smooth, for others it makes them feel the game is sluggish.

I can't play with Motion Blur enabled myself.
 
TBH, I really dont see what the big fuss is about needing the best cards to run Crysis. I just bought a £100 9600GT and its now totally playable at 1680x1050 HIGH. Yeah I only get 30fps, but with the motion blur it feels really quite smooth.

Its only a single player game, its not as if you need 60+fps to be competative online, if it drops down to 20fps in certain parts for a few seconds, its not the end of the world.

Anyway, the game is much overhyped imo, I've yet to think "wow, i've not seen that before" Unlike Bioshock for example, which really was refreshing.

Thats subjective.

30 FPS just isn't enough for me.
 
You asked the question, yet you already know the answer. For you, it seems you need to upgrade to get your desired fps.

For me, I've seen it all countless times before, back in the day, I upgraded from a GF4ti to a 9800Pro that cost £320 just to play HL2 in DX9. I remember I bought it a week before the official release date, and a day later it was revealed it'll be delayed for a couple of months :) By the time it came out, my shiny new 9800Pro cost £150.

And way before that I spent an insane amount (considering how much i then earnt) on a Voodoo1 to play GLQuake, which at the time was about the only game that actually used it! But then that was when every frame mattered and you'd be playing quake for years.

Crysis is an odd game tho, most games I wouldn't dream of playing that low an FPS, but Crysis never actually felt that bad...

Anyway, even if you go SLi/Crossfire there are going to be several points in the game where you are going to be in the 20's, and the majority of the time you'll be in the 40's.

So it's either get used to it, or leave crysis for a year and come back to it when technology has caught up.

why not just wait - new tech is round the corner - start putting your pennies away for a bit and you can get a nice new card when they are released
im making do with my sig specs until the time is right to upgrade

you KNOW there is nothing that will run crysis maxed so dont insight a flamewar- just wait a bit - its always the case - it always will be

you seem to be posting like you have a serious case of "yeah, but..." syndrome

just leave it out
10k+ posts must mean you know what you are doing so why create a thread like this

i could understand if you were new and were looking for advice...:rolleyes:
