Is it acceptable to be on your mobile while at a check out in a supermarket.

I don't know the till worker, I'm not their friend. I don't use my phone at the till but I didn't come to the supermarket to make crappy small talk to someone I probably wont see again for weeks/months.

I say hi and that's the end of my conversation with them. I don't see why you should be ****** at someone for talking on their phone as long as they aren't holding the line up.
 
I'm afraid it's just another rudeness of a mobile phone user and it will get worse.
I was watching a band last night and the couple next to me never lifted their heads up once to look at the band and as a cyclist I have to look for pedestrians looking at their phones and then just walking into the gutter.
One of the worst cases I've come across is a bloke who was in our department for about 3 months. He was quite high up and his job involved talking to Clinicians and time is money. He'd think nothing of seeing his mobile phone ring and then tell the Clinician he would get back to them while continuing a conversation with his fiancee. This would happen dozens of times a day.
Looking at my 27 year old now, she's got the TV on but I haven't seen her head lift up once from her phone in over 30 minutes but every now and then she laughs out loud at something said on the TV.
About a month ago I went to pay for petrol and the girl behind the counter was on her mobile and basically blanked me until she finished her call.
IT WILL GET WORSE.

Something's in life should not need to be explained assuming this has been posed by a mature adult:confused::p

As others have said, you just say to the person on the phone "I'll just be a moment" or you say to the cashier "apologies this is very important" if it's of such earth shattering importance that the person on the line can't wait one minute:p

Ta daaaaa! problem solved and World War Three averted:p

Of course it's rude and if you don't understand that then no one can explain it to you:o:p

as long as it doesn't delay other customers and/or stop you from being able to respond to any questions from the till person then whats the issue - if she's just got to scan a few items and take your debit card off you then frankly she should wind her neck in, you being on the phone doesn't have to stop her doing her job
 
i worked on checkouts whilst at uni. It is rude but never made a deal of it, as said earlier in thread. Not worth it. Plus i was normally on auto pilot anyway.
 
i don't see a problem unless you stopped filling your bags to talk on the phone and were holding the queue up.
 
I worked in a supermarket checkout till recently and it's never bothered me. As long as they recognise key things I say ie how are you paying etc I'm not too bothered on idle chat
 
I've been told to finish my call at the checkout too, as well as on the train by busy body middle aged/older women. When asked how my conversation on the phone was any different to me having a conversation with somebody stood next to me, they couldn't answer.

It seems the most annoying part of somebody being on their phone is the fact they can't listen in. How ironic.
