Is It Big Enough?

Just use 2 psu's,it's a mining rig so dont have to look the business, you have got a good psu there so use that for the cards and another for the rest of the system, not worth sending anything back at this point.

The 1000W PSU will be enough for the cards alone you reckon?

My next question is - what would you recommend to power the rest of the system and how would I go about setting it up?

The more I think about it though, I'm not sure my current PSU has enough ports for all four GPU's? http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=320

Thanks in advance everybody.

From what i can see you have a bigger problem than what size psu you need. You have four cards you want to use, yes? Looking through Asrocks website the only 970 board that has more than two pci-e slots is the 970 Extreme4 and even that only has three.

I was planning on using the riser cables to allow me to get more in. The board shouldn't be a problem.

I have that motherboard in my old Rig, I imagine 4 cards would make the thing explode, it's not a great board at all.

PS: You have a heck of a lot of mining to do, to get that money back! :o

You *could* run it all off a 1KW PSU as long as the rest of the system is bare minimum power efficiency stuff and you undervolt the cards, however the burst draw on boot may be an issue.

For ref I am running a 3x R290X mining rig off a 750w XFX (Seasonic) PSU and it has headroom. I don't know anything about Silverstone but looking in the OcUK store they appear decent. If you only just bought the PSU you could try it and just DSR the PSU if it's not up to it /shrug.

I wouldn't want to be mining on that setup even with undervolted cards. Sounds like a recipe for a very expensive electrical explosion.

I'd want to mine on 3x 290X's with a 750W XFX even less, even if it does have a peak draw of close to 900W.

I'm going to order a Super Flower 1300W this afternoon... Hope that's enough :p

Now I'm trying to source a decent motherboard / CPU bundle because the one I ordered has apparently gone out of stock.

Any suggestions guys?

Generally speaking when the amount of power being draw from a PSU is lower than the amount it is designed to give that's not a recipe for an electrical explosion ;)

You have to remember that while companies like Cit design their PSU's to give up to a maximum of their rated performance and you should hang back from approaching it, companies like Seasonic design them to give at least their rated performance and you should have no issue reaching it. pulling ~600w from a Seasonic built PSU rated for 750w is not a risk in the slightest.

290X's can pull around 300W each at peak load, that makes it 900W for the VGA cards alone, not including the rest of the system.

Suddenly... Boom! :rolleyes::eek:

Believe me, I have nothing against your PSU, I have one myself (XFX Pro 750W 80+ Silver) and it is a great unit, but what you are putting it through is madness. :p

The thing is, a lot of people don't realise that mining although demanding on the GPU is actually much less intensive on the card and system as wholes than gaming, as such a R290X mining it's backside off isn't really going to use any more juice than a 7970 playing Metro, if it uses that much.

I was originally going to put my 1KW EVGA platinum in the mining rig and the old XFX in my desktop however after seeing the amount of power actually being used I decided not to bother.

Can I have some thoughts on the follow CPU and Motherboard combination please? As mentioned earlier, it will be running 4 GPU (using riser cables for a couple of them).

This board is £35 cheaper: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-472-GI&groupid=701&catid=1903&subcat=2399

It's FM2+ but the boards are backwards compatible with FM2 CPUs (its just the reverse that doesn't work)

Unless i'm going mad, one of those boards has 3x PCI-E 16x slots, and one has 2x. That isnt 4x. :p

Jesus Christ on a bike wndsr! AMD are having an extra christmas party in your honour as we speak after those purchases.

You could always donate x2 of the 290's to me. I'd give you free anger management therapy in return.

I think I have funded their Christmas party... Ha!
