Pretty normal for April. Bring back the summer of 2018!
Nah!

On a more serious note.

You younglings have no ******* idea as to what a cold winter really means.

63 was -15 for over a month.

The channel froze 4 miles out each side. there was a concern that it might end up freezing over altogether.

I was a toddler in the Hague at the time and it was -30C there (Still played outside though)

A winter like that today would result in the complete collapse of economic operations for the duration and the electricity power cuts would result in the deaths of 10's of thousands of people. (Perhaps even more)

Back then most buildings were heated with coal. You didn't need external electricity to make the heating work. A week long power cut was an inconvenience rather than a major problem. Today, a week long power-cut with temperatures of -15 would be a Biblical level national disaster!

Global warming? Yes please. Really!

:/

This is true. I was born a couple of years later but grew up in a house with coal fires, and well remember ice on the inside of the windows in the winter. The house I'm in now has central heating, and if the power goes off it rapidly turns into an icebox.

I used to love sitting in front of the coal fire watching TV

Also used to burn just about everything in it :o

I am glad that at least some people are seeing the light.

I really believe that the greatest threat for the people of the UK is a really cold winter.

I really do, we are totally and utterly unprepared to cope with a 63 winter. The nature of the world back then meant life could go on.

Today the over-reliance on electricity, technology and (Most of all) transport would leave us all in a terrifyingly vulnerable position.

I would actually like to know what COBR has in mind for this particular scenario, but I suspect the mere inkling of the possibility has not even begun to enter their collective minds.

:(((

No its not colder than normal its only the first week April can be nice and warm but just often chilly and cold. I can remember a blizzard once in April.

Suits me fine actually finally finished sorting out the greenhouse spent two afternoons forking over the beds ready for the toms etc. Doing that on a hot day is not my idea of fun and even when its chilly out the sun will raise the temperature to uncomfortable levels in no time so today its nice and cloudy, perfect.

Looking back through my weather station logs shows the following:-

April 7th 2016 saw a low of 4.8 degrees at 03.15 and a high of 8.9 degrees C at 15.15.
April 7th 2017 saw a low of 6.2 degrees C at 05.08 and a high of 14.1 degrees C at 15.08.
April 7th 2018 saw a low of 6.4 degrees C at 03.17 and a high of 13.8 degrees C at 14.17.
April 7th 2019 saw a low of 5.6 degrees C at 09.17 and a high of 6.9 degrees at 15.17. (the low will be lower before 11.59 as the temp is dropping quickly now).

So yes it is cooler than recent years. One thing that has gone up though is rainfall. Last Wednesday we had 49.9mm in just 16 hours. We only has 68.7mm for the whole of March.

Perfect. I was wondering why we needed a poll to gauge opinion on something that can be evidenced with data.

I don't remember it normally being this cold in April :(

My car windscreen was iced up in the morning a few days ago  and I been having to keep the heaters on at home all the time..

Many morning this week on the way to work my car outside Temperature reading has been 2 & 3 Degrees
get used to it over the next 40+ yrs it will be dang cold. by 2024 you will be looking at mid june for it to be warming up. 2030 summers will hit max temps of 19-24 deg c ..
don't you love it the end is near for the global warming hoax that's cost us loads .. I'm having 2 dual fuel fires fitted this summer ..

The construction of modern houses doesn't help here.

Most modern houses may be well insulated, but the internal walls are mostly timber and plasterboard. There is nothing to retain heat.

My old house has all the internal walls made from brick.

IE the inside of the house has perhaps 10 tons, 20 even (I really dont know off hand) of masonry that will retain heat and keep the house warm long after the heating has gone off.

Of course it works the other way too. It takes several days of heating on to bring the house up to temperature if the heating has been off for a while.

This is why technologies such as Hive/Phone control and so on dont really make any sense in older buildings. The thermal time constants are just too great for rapid on-off cycles to make much of a difference to heating costs.

Probably double glazing, modern heating systems, electricity, technology and good transport systems.

I grew up in a 'old' house, made out of brick etc and it was awful. The fire made a huge difference yes. But the central heating just didn't work as well as a modern house. Most of the heat was gone under the wooden floor or escaped in the large ceilings.

I dunno, it’s feeling pretty bad to me. I can remember having a beer in my sunny garden last April. Doesn’t look like there’ll be one day warm enough for that this month.

@Rroff Are your charts showing the weather picking up at all mate?
