Is it illegal to drive barefoot?

I would certainly not recommend driving bare foot or with headphones. While it may not be illegal, in the event of an accident your insurance company could use it against you. These buggers love to establish how responsible you were for an accident. Whether it's illegal or not, it's certainly irresponsible to drive bare foot.

The insurance company would have to prove that it was a negligent act that had was part of the cause of an accident. Which is highly unlikely.

As for people saying it's irresponsible, I have absolutely no idea what you're going on about. I think I have more control over my car without shoes on then I do with them.

Something does not have to be observed to be indecent. Cracking one off in a toilet cubical at work is unlikely so be seen. But I'm quite sure it still counts as indecent

Agreed, I find it much easier to drive in bare feet than in boots with thick soles that dont really flex, means you have to have your whole foot on a pedal rather than your toes

I dont think it would do, primarily because how would you ever get caught without someone spying on you in the toilet, secondly the first case regarded doing it on your own property, if you're out of public sight then you can legally felch someone, cant see why you couldnt take a dump

This is going rather off topic, but it would be illegal if someone saw you and made a complaint.

I don't agree, if the accident was due to your failure stop quick enough, I am sure an insurance company could claim that the force on your unprotected foot impacted your response time. I don't believe they intially have to prove anything, they can simply refuse to pay out or adjust the amount. This is the standard response of insurance companies to most claims. It would then be up to you to pursue the issue through the courts.

I find it equally hard to see how people cannot see the potential dangers of driving barefooted. Incidently, I would find it equally irresponsible to drive in footware that is not fit for purpose, for example very large heavy work boots. This is obviously vechile dependant, it's perfectly fine to drive a tractor with heavy boots on, but not Peugeot 106

My mate wears nothing on his feet but flip flops 24/7, including whilst driving.

I dunno how he does it, I need my shoes on. I've reversed off the drive a few times with just my socks on and that was hard enough :p

I find it much easier to drive with 1 eye open rather than both closed, that does not make it better than having both open. Unresponsive boots are a bad idea too.

That made me laugh. I've not heard something so preposterous in a while. I doubt an insurance company could say that with a straight face and personally, I'd be happy to take them to court over it.

Which are?

I take your point there, but there arent many times I am required to work with both eyes shut but am allowed to open one on the way home
Although despite the sharp things under your feet scenario (which has never happened to me, and I cant see it just happening rather than happening before you've driven off) driving without shoes on is beneficial, why do you think racing shoes are so thin?
