Is it possible to build a Minecraft PC for under £400?

Mine above has Kaveri, under £400. :p
Sacrifice the SSD as it won't help with Minecraft.

Dunno if its changed but the load/joining server times used to be massively reduced in Minecraft if you had an SSD. (Again as before I've not played it since the alpha builds).

These all look great, I suspect once all family members have chipped in his total funds will be closer to £300 than £400 but he has a little money of his own still saved up.

Honestly then I wouldn't be buying new. You should be able to find components at least as good as the system paintguy mentions (from 5-6 years ago) for cheap. I'd guess £100-150 for a socket 775 PC. But it will be effort. Best of luck.

Well the time is nearly here, I will need to order this soon. Looks like he will end up with between £350-£400.

Was thinking this might be ok, unless someone points out something I have missed?

Edit: turns out I dont know how to post my basket like the others in the thread, will find out how and post it.

Minecraft runs on Linux, that's 75 quid saved right there if you decide to go open source for your OS. Plus it's faster, more stable, more secure and there is no need to worry about viruses. Takes up much less room on your SSD too, if that's a concern.

Could he not use a trial version of Windows 8.1 for the time being? Would free up a fair chunk of cash that could be used on getting a Better spec.

He'll get 3 months to then save up again for a full version.

Sure he could; he's still going to have to pay for it though, when he could be getting an arguably better OS for free.

Linux isn't half as scary as most people think, most modern distros are very user friendly. I recently installed elementary OS on a friends laptop; she knows very little about computers but picked it up in no time, and was very happy at how much faster and "prettier" it was than her previous Windows install.

Strangely though despite being an "enthusiast" forum the Linux presence here is almost invisible, which is a shame; perhaps with Valve pushing Steam OS and more and more publishers offering games with native Linux support we'll see that change, could only be a good thing for all of us (even Windows users).

Looks good. Swap the PSU for this one though. Same price but better energy efficiency. The 5800K uses about 200 W max (at the wall) so 300 W is plenty.

wasn't sure what kind of power I needed so this is very useful to know, will swap it.

Windows in the killer here, while I would love to use Linux I think he would struggle with it as Windows is all he has ever used. Plus if things don't work I actually have an idea where to start with Windows :)

Just wanted to post to say that this is now built without issues and so far I have a very happy child as its running Minecraft great and even things like TF2.

I am actually impressed how good this little system is for the price.

Thanks for all the help people :)
