Is it possible to modify a thumbstick?

okay I just installed open office portable onto my usb stick and it took 17 minutes in a usb 1.1 port. From that timing can we determine the speed of my usb stick, is it 6x 8x 12x???

As it took 17 minutes do you know how long it would have taken in a usb 2.0 port?

Would also be interested to know this, CPW were giving out 512MB sticks at Uni a while back but half of it's partitioned off with their crappy advertising.

Are there any utilities out there that would get rid of it?

(Oh, and dvdbunny in "not totally retarded question" shocker! ;))

I should have been clearer here. The "partitioned" bit appears as an optical drive when I plug it in. I can't touch it in Disk Management as it's apparantly "read only" and it won't format.

My PC is over 5 years old. I just did a test. Now that I installed open office portable onto the usb stick taking 17 minutes, I also installed open office portable onto my PC first which took around 3 minutes. Then I copied the folder onto my usb stick and waited to see how much faster it would be to get onto the usb disk as it had already been extracted/unpacked on my PC. The progerss bar changed from 17 minutes to all sorts of numbers. But then as it was coming around the 14 minutes mark and showed a countdown in seconds. Then the usb disk ran out of space as I had not removed the first installation of the file. i didn't want to but just thought I had enough room. Well anyway even though I didn't get the whole folder onto the usb disk it still would have been around 15 minutes for the folder to of copied over to the disk. Now while I was doing this, I was browsing the net to pass the time. So that could have slowed down things as well my anti virus was enabled. I am using avira anti vir and usb 1.1. I noticed the progress bar did speed up once I stopped browsing the net. But that might not mean anything. When I did the first install straight onto the usb disk I had my anti virus still enabled resulting in the 17 minutes time it took. But anyway from this numbers can we determine the speed of my usb disk??? and how much faster would it of been in a usb 2.0 port? Also is it better to always extract or do the installs on your PC then transfer it to the usb disk? for instance is better to use bittorrent to download directly to the usb stick providing the disk is fast speed like 64x?

Many thanks in advance
