Is it really getting that desperate in retail?

I've never been chased into the car park by sales staff, I must be doing it wrong :(
Closest thing was probably in Majorca some guy trying to get me into a bar following me along the street for like 100 yards.

All of the big electronic retail stores let you check stock levels and reserve stuff online, why wander round asking then waiting for 10 mins when all it takes is a few clicks? :p

Lol, reminds of my last visit to the asteroid like electrical shop I was just killing time before I picked up my new car from garage and I was constantly accosted by sales reps. In the end I just told the guy "look I will never buy from your shop I'm just killing time "

Lol

Sadly the sales staff get disciplinarys if they dont approach customers, which is why they are approaching you asking if you need help etc. I use to work for that company on the shop floor for a few years before I decided to move onto better things and although comission was stopped in around 2003, the company introduced some awful bonus scheme which in reality meant you never saw anything more than minimum wage. Was an extremely complicated system based on you putting through 20-30k per week through the till with "quality" on it, so 10% warranty min, same with essentials (basically batteries for a remote control type of sales, ink for a printer etc) and numerous other "addins" to basic sales.

The guy saying about having to go back to a manager when you can't sell a warranty is sadly standard practise, as is the dodgy deals appearing IF you take the warranty out (to cover the margin, yet screw the customer either way).

You can however, armed with this knowledge, bleed these stores dry if you plan things properly. Example is I bought my MBP 2010 top 15 inch model from that store for less than student price, including the warranty which covers accidental damage, whilst also having a printer, 1tb external hdd, magic mouse, £60 bag, office for mac 2011 and iWorks all thrown in free with it. Go in late on a saturday afternoon as thats the end of the sales week at these stores and say you have XXX to spend and you want XXX for it otherwise you'll just go and buy online. Say you saw the product cheaper on online stores but your interested in the warranty but dont want to pay anywhere near the prices they are quoting. Leads to BIG discounts :)

Similarly, I used to work for the purple shirts' support wing -- for 5 years, in fact -- and after moving to a better company, after 6 months of working there I'd already ended up with a bonus amounting to more than the entire accrued yearly bonuses I'd "achieved" with DSG.

Their bonus schemes are an absolute joke. In fact, the entire company is.

Being much more than the usual "drone" they employ, I have an excessive amount of intelligence on their internal business practices. I've had many an inkling to approach the press or write a book regarding it, especially having seen the recent "Don't Get Done, Get Dom" episode on the company, and his pretty quick forgiveness of their treatment of the SOGA.

re previous comment about not being able to wait to see some DSG stores closing...

You might not have long to wait. At one point last year, due to "cashflow", DSG had a period of time where the manufacturers would not allow them to place any further orders as they were not paying them.

It will not be any easier at all this year, in fact likely to be worse. I am willing to bet that where we have the purple shirt stores right next to the blue shirt stores (like in most out of town retail parks) we will start to see the two stores merged in a bid to try and improve thier situation.

Guy who works for them......... I recommend you take out redundancy insurance.
