Is it safe to buy fuel/diesel from supermarket chain stores?

never had a problem with petrol from supermarkets or branded, i have put diesel in a petrol vehicle though, twice lol, that caused problems.
 
The only difference between supermarket fuel and branded fuel, is the additives. The base fuel is the same, most likely coming from the same refinery.

I say this as chemical engineer who used to work in the petrochemical industry.
Surely an engineer should know that 110% is an oxymoron? ;)
 
This is my annual PSA to anyone running small two stroke engines to use ethanol free fuel if possible and if you must use 95 RON E5 unleaded, never leave any fuel in the fuel system if the equipment isn’t being used for extended periods.

I use the Stihl pre mix, it's about £20 a gallon but I can leave in my hedge cutter and has as extended life . edit it's called motomix

I honestly thought this was common knowledge (surely people don't think Tesco & Sainsburys have their own oil extraction and refining sections :confused:), but this thread seems to prove otherwise :(

Depends on the context surely? It's perfectly valid to say something has increased by 110%

E.g. if petrol used to have 10% ethanol in, and that was increased by 110%, it would now contain 21% ethanol :p

I had a 2.0TFSI A3 about 10 years ago, I'm convinced that every time I filled it up with Asda unleaded it ran rough. On that silly basis, I've avoided Asda ever since but will happily fill up with any other supermarket.
 
Had my car for basically 7 years and apart from the very rare occasion I have only ever used Asda, Tesco, or Sainsburys for Petrol and never once had an issue in the 40000 miles I've driven the car and it still (appears to me) to have the same poke as the first day I drove it.
 
Predominantly use supermarket fuel (Tesco) and never had an issue with regular unleaded, premium or diesel.
I use the premium in a race bike and back to back on the dyno with Shell premium there was no difference.
 
I generally stick to Shell in my wife's car as someone who seemed to know what they were talking about once told me that their additive package was better at minimising carbon build up... and better still if you use V-Power but I can't justify the extra cost. If it wasn't direct injection I probably wouldn't even give carbon build up a second thought.

Company car gets whatever is closest when I want to fill it up.

My MX-5 gets filled wherever is convenient but I'll only feed that super unleaded because I don't want tank fulls of E10 sat in it for prolonged periods... even though the jury is out as to whether that is even a problem on mk1's.
 
Only had one issue with supermarket fuel - few years ago there was a problem where a containership wasn't correctly washed down after carrying diesel and that contaminated a load of petrol.
Filled my car at Tesco and within miles the car was spluttering, low power, etc - still didn't initially put it down to the fuel until it hit the press.

Tesco were very good about it in the end - I took the car in, it obviously had to be emptied of fuel, flushed, filters replaced etc. I had a loan car for the couple of days they kept it - all fully refunded by Tesco, including the cost of the full tank of fuel I'd put in, within 14 days.
Obviously shouldn't have happened, but again - Tesco wont have been the company actually running that process of shipping fuel, storing fuel etc.

Yup, that's completely out of Tesco's hands. The fuel contamination should have been picked up at the refinery and would most likely have affected a number of different forecourts.
 
I remember the big diesel contamination thing back in the 00s and it was everywhere, not just one brand.

This is why I asked because I know we've had a few of these. I wonder how many people were affected and where actually able to identify that it was tesco fuel!

I was trying to remember when it had happened for me - just to put into context, although I bought fuel from a supermarket that was contaminated, it didn't put me off.
I still buy now, and use Momentum in my current car.

It was 2007 - I was driving a little Pug 307 at the time - from what I remember at the time, it was only certain cars that seemed to have issues - nearly everything French, then strangely it was Jag's or something like that.

My car specifies 98 RON so the nearest to me is Shell for 99 RON V Power but if I'm ever passing a Tesco that has Momentum I'll fill it up as it's a lot cheaper than V Power.

If there was a Tesco closer to me I'd go there instead of Shell.
 
I opt for wherever local to me is cheapest, sometimes it’s supermarket sometimes not.

The thing that amuses me about the supermarket fuel debate is when I goto the Stanlow or Fawley refineries you see queues of tankers from both branded suppliers and supermarkets queuing up together to collect fuel from there….
