Is it safe to constantly access external HDs?

I've recently upgraded to a laptop and bought a 500GB WD MyBook from OCUK to store my music and other large files.

My question is, I use my PC constantly for music and are these external HDs designed to tolerate constant usage. I quite often just sit on itunes cycling through different songs.

Obviously I will backup my music on my old PC too but my actual current and active library will be on the WD MyBook.

Thanks,

Yup should be fine. :) My Synology box (which has a 500GB WD in it) runs 24 hours a day and there are many many PCs around the world which sit running all day long.

ffs the drive is a few hours old and problems already!!!!

I'm attempting to backup about 300GB worth of stuff from my old PC and have been doing this since thd drive was delivered.

Windows XP is now saying the drive is full and there is insufficient space to copy the files accross.

The drive hass 282GB remaining, 182GB used and total capacity 465GB

Any ideas?

Obviously xp cant copy 300GB data to hdd which has 282GB free :P

I think he means the data stopped copying and said there was not enough space but when he checked he still had 282GB left.

Is it Fat32 or NTFS as files over 4GB will say there is not enough space if its Fat32
