I remember reading somewhere that Nvidia are going to make a cpu..

Have you heard this before?

and do you think its true?

whats your thoughts on this and think they'll do a good job?

Nvidia need to break into the x86/64 market if they are to survive in the PC market with the way things are going with GPU + CPU chips. The only way this is likely to happen is they do a deal with VIA.

Nvidia are targeting embedded systems with Tegra unless they buyout VIA who hold a x86 licence (Nvidia already owns a large stake in this company) I doubt you will see any Nvidia branded CPU's any time soon.

I cannot remember where i read it was a while ago in another forum this was discussed but buying via wouldn't automatically mean they could produce x86 processors. Someone who seemed to be in the know said that licence would become null and void if nvidia took over the company. Like i say this was a good couple of years ago cannot even remember the forum perils of joining too many i guess but it was discussed and the via angle was ruled out by the forum members who seemed to have a lot of knowledge on the subject.

I think nvidia can see how things are going and realise if they cannot do something soon they are in real trouble and won't be able to compete. Designing from the ground up any processor is nigh on impossible for them to do so a deal of some kind would have to be done which given the problems nvidia have had and made with other big companys in the past few years would also make that a highly difficult task.

As i said was a couple of years ago lol and to be honest i am not that into it all to have kept upto date. Though that article doesn't say they couldn't it just says it would be harder for them and given how intransigent nvidia can be it wouldn't be a hard sell to say they were unreasonable in the good faith talks :).
