Is it true?

not true, there will still be a big performance boost, ive had crossfire 3870 on a 16x and 4x board, performance increase was still close to 75%

It will work and you will see a benefit but the performance would be very slightly limited by the 4x slot.

For similar xfired 3870 performance it would probably be more adviseable to get the 3870X2 and just use the single 16x slot.

Before i had the X2 i ran 2x 2900XT's crossfired on a P35 DS3P. The performance improvement was good but the X2 i have now returns better gaming and benchmark results.

Hey ademcg,

The card's great but i'm fairly tempted to checkout the GX2 - always playing, chopping and changing. It is truly a sickness! :(

X2's an awesome card though. Compared to my crossfired 2900's and my overclocked GTX and G92 GTS it's been the fastest card i've owned.

Without starting a new thread, is there such a thing as a 6 pin to 8 pin PSU adaptor? because I think I'm going to be a bit screwed going with a X2 when my PSU doesn't have the 8 pin connection.

There are 6-8 pin adapters but the X2 will run with 2x 6 pin connectors no problem.

I believe all that is effected when you do use 6 pin plugs is that overclocking options are disabled in ATi's Catalyst Control Center (CCC).

I know the new 9800GX2 comes with a 6-8pin adapter but i don't think the majority of ATi cards do.

Yeah X2 doesn't require an 8x Pin, can use 2x 6x Pin's, as said above, only thing the 8x Pin does is ungrey the Overdrive tab in the drivers so you can use that to overclock it, but with 2x 6x Pin's, you just have to use a 3rd party prog, like ATi Tool. :)
