Is it weird to use someones name when its just you and them?

If a salesperson overuses my name I can't help but think they've been taking notes at a "Maximise your sales performance" presentation.

Hi there, Mutt. I couldn't help you've been looking at that plasma TV over there, Mutt. Did you know that we currently have an offer on our very reasonable finance packages, Mutt? Why don't you come over here and have a seat, Mutt and we can go through the terms together?

You swine! :D

For the photo you could have just taken a screen grab from that little video you made though. That's a salesman's face if ever I saw one. It's the brilliant white teeth that give it away.

I find it very creepy and obsessive when people use my name in regular conversations.

More so when it's one on one. A girl I'm dating at the moment does it via text. Drives me insane! "How was today Chris?" "I like that you want to go to dinner Chris" "Chris, do you want to do this". Just makes me cringe a little.

Why do people do it?

You should see my corporate photos - pinstripe suit and everything. Salesman turned up to 11. :o

You should post one of the photo's. I'm sure I can find a place for it on this sign I made for my parents porch window:

Usually I don't ever use my friends name, I come up with some sort of crude nickname or just straight up refer to them as "Oi ****head" "****y ********!" etc.

It's a mutual thing, if you don't verbally abuse your friends as a greeting you aren't true friends.

And suddenly that now makes sense and the song is in mind for the rest of the day... thanks :S

If they're a friend - It's a little weird... However, if you're with a new client and haven't met them before, I use their name slightly more often both to; help myself remember their name, and because I find people generally seem more receptive to hearing their name from a new person :p

Odd but interesting question.

I use people's names in a 1:1 situation, but thinking about it, only in specific situations for instance when I want to particularly call their attention to something, for example -'Gracious me X, just look at those people over there!!!!!!'

This, I'm pretty sure it's supposed to build rapport but it always comes across as awkward and forced. We've got a supplier at work who always overuses our names, it's a bit of a running joke in our team.

Only thing that creeps me out

Is at work having a name badge .. customers calling you by your name!!

I normally backfire it and ask them for their name :)

a friend and I actually had this discussion since we both have worked in retail. We now both actually go out of our way to say peoples names that have name tags on as it's quite amusing, most people look uncomfortable when you do :D Even down to the guy who checks your ticket at the cinema, saying like "Thanks John" when he hands them back.

Sure, if I'm like "morning John" or "hey Dave, fancy a Chinese?" if you've a problem with that have you considered that you might be the one that's odd?

I noticed a while back that I very rarely use people's names, unless the situation actually requires it i.e. to gain their attention. No idea why, just feels odd when I do. People seem to use my name in conversation etc far more than I would theirs.
