Is it weird to use someones name when its just you and them?

+1

My mind immediately thinks that there is someone else here or the conversation is being recorded

It actually giving my chills just thinking about it!

Most bizarre thing I have ever read or heard.

How can something so trivial give someone the chills?

Worst for me is "Hello Efour. How are you today Efour?"

That would just get a Is this guy serious look?? followed by mild discomfort :)

Sounds creepy to me too, and also weirdly it sounds impersonal.
If you're in a one to one scenario why do you need to address them by their name.
You'd use direct name addressing in an environment where there's a few people, and in that scenario it's a positive thing to bring them into a conversation or ask for their opinions directly.
Freaky thread. I'm thinking Hannibal Lecter, or HAL from 2001 :p

Was talking about this very subject with a few mates the other day. Yes its weird. When sales people do it I just want to tell them to £$%" off as its blatantly some feeble control mechanism they believe is working in their favor but i can imagine some people will find it endearing.

This is an excerpt from "How to win friends and influence people":

"Remember that a person’s name is to that
person the sweetest and most important
sound in any language."

To be fair, the author is talking about bosses and world leaders remembering the names of their subordinates. If you were to constantly use the name of the person you're talking to they'd see it as insincere and you'd be lucky to escape without being thumped.

Really? :/

I'm a salesperson and I do it because I've found it becomes a lot harder to close if I forget the name of a customer.

But you're right, it's all Jedi mind tricks we use. :p

Only thing that creeps me out

Is at work having a name badge .. customers calling you by your name!!

I normally backfire it and ask them for their name :)

If a salesperson overuses my name I can't help but think they've been taking notes at a "Maximise your sales performance" presentation.
