Is it worth switching from Hotmalil to Gmail?

I would switch... but going onto all the websites and changing the email address that account is registered with sounds like a pain!

Gmail lets you pull via pop all your mail from other accounts.

I use gmail to pull hotmail and my personal domains are pushed. Even other gmail accounts that I have are pushed to my primary gmail account.

Gmail is just a pain for me!!

I needed a Gmail account to sign up to android market, now thats linked to my phone every 30 days I get locked out and have to request a new access code to be sent to my phone so I can log in! I dont even know my password because it wouldn't accept any of my 'usual' varients and I cant seem to change it!

Its also linked itself nicely to my Youtube account so every 30 days I get locked out of there too untill ive requested a new access code for Gmail.

On top of all that I dont actually know my Gmail address as again, all the varients I use had been taken so ive been left with a load of random numbers in my Gmail address that I can never remember!!

It probably doesn't help that I split up with my ex and as she knew a few of my passwords Ive had to change them all, so ive no idea which varient of my new passwords ive used or whether its still one of my old varients of password.

Im a little lost in multiple passwords, usernames and hotmail/Gmail addresses!!!!

If I got a CV with a hotmail.co.uk email address I would secretly be thinking "noob".

If I got a CV with a hotmail.com email address I would secretly be thinking "oldskooler - remember the good ol' ICQ days? Respect".

If I got a CV with a googlemail.com email address I would secretly be thinking "you can change to gmail.com now if you live in the UK - don't you follow the gmail blog? Noob".

If I got a CV with a gmail.com email address I would be thinking "you're my kinda guy".

If I got a CV with a personal domain email address I would be thinking "Pro, dude. Pro".

GOOD THING I'M NOT A MANAGER AND JUST SOME NERD REALLY, RIGHT?

Fixed. ;)

Right, making the switch.

Does anyone have experience of changing their games for windows live login email address so I won't constantly be using my old email?

(Some amazing grammar mistakes I made last night)

You can create an alias account through hotmail to use @live.co.uk. I've just done it and it took 10 seconds. You can then choose to send email from your @hotmail.co.uk or @live.co.uk account when composing an email. All replies come through to your hotmail, and any replies to emails sent using your @live.co.uk account will remain from @live.co.uk.

Might be an option.

I'm quite lucky, as I have my firstnamelastname@yahoo, hotmail & live and gmail. I use yahoo primarily, but have lots of Microsoft services like XBOX, Windows Phone etc which is all linked through hotmail. Gmail is only used for Google checkout really.

Hotmail isn't as bad as I remember, and I get no spam at all to it.

So you see, the solution is simple!

AND you can keep your hotmail as GMail has a fully fledge pop/imap/mail import feature built in.

There's no excuse to not have a GMail account. Plus, once you're on board you can sign in to all Google services via your GMail account and those services will backup and sync with it making things even simpler.

I don't use Google Apps via my domain as there are some services that are not available to Apps users yet. Instead I just mailforward from domain to GMail and then have GMail set up to send via my domain's SMTP. This way it has the exact same effect as if you were using a Google Apps account via a domain and none of this "sent on behalf of" rubbish.

The send as domain feature applies to Android phones too which is great.

I have absolutely no need for one, and I don't want one?

However, it does mean your ass is Google's :p

Not really. Google allows you to export all of your saved data to your computer and so on, just like most decent social network type services these days.

As for privacy concerns, well it's only a concern for the paranoid and the weird. There are many options to control privacy settings, just like on most decent online services today.

I meant Google will know everything about your on-line habits. Literally everything now that you are signed in all the time.

No more or less than any other service. Why is it a major concern anyway? Do you browse child porn or something? :p I don't do that but I may or may not have downloaded music/a movie or a TV show via a Google service and I've never complained before.

As I said, yes they can see where you're signed in and when, but you can see that too as the information is in your account area. You can clear the data if you so wish as well. Plus, if someone does hack your password and signs in at the same time from another location it flags and notifies you that your account is being used at another IP giving details, you can then sign out of all other sessions and quickly change your password or whatever. So yes, in a way location logging is a good thing.

Location based services if you're signed in from your phone can be turned off or controlled with permissions.

You make it sound like you have no say in the matter. I've been using this type of thing for years and I can tell you that you most certainly do have a say!

It's not a "major concern". Though something is for you, given you've immediately jumped on the defensive at one flippant comment :p

I prefer to keep my habits to myself, thanks :p

Clearing the data for you is not what I am referring to. Google keep all data about browsing habits whether you opt out or not. The only thing "clearing" it does, it stop it showing up on your page so your spouse/family/house mates can't see what you've looked at. Google never delete data. :)
