Is it worth upgrading a 8700k?

Planning on upgrading my gpu in a month to a 7900xtx. Will I be leaving a lot of performance on the table by sticking with my current cpu?
Current gen consoles are 8 core whereas this is 6, will I run into bottlenecks? I'm heading a lot about bottlenecks currently but I also feel that I've never seen this thing stretch its legs fully either

You would definitely see some benefit with such a powerful card, especially in minimum FPS, even at that resolution. It is dependent on the games you play and what frame rate you're targeting, and with newer platforms you get access to resizable BAR, which in some games will make a massive difference.

There won't be any harm in getting the card first and seeing if you're happy with the performance. There may even be more information available by then regarding the Ryzen 7000 X3D parts, which seem like they will be extremely fast CPUs for gaming, and possibly worth holding out for.

There's a bios update for my motherboard which can enable resizable bar which I've been meaning to install so I'm not too worried about that.

Thanks for the input guys, I'll wait a while longer I think :)

i've upgraded to a 4090 with a i7 7700K and i'm bottlenecking by about 5-20% fps wise depending on the game. i'm a vr gamer where the resolutions are high. i think your cpu will hold u back a bit.

At what framerates typically?
Framerates i game at? Anything from 35 to 72 fps. I game at high res and the fps is on the lower side. At high res the gpu is utlized more, every game bar 1 has the gpu at 96+%. I think u will gain from a new gpu much more than a new cpu just be aware u might be cpu bottlenecked a bit especially if u game at lower resolutions.

I would upgrade gpu first as I have been stung in the ass upgrading my cpu,mem and board before gpu, with a very little gaming boost. I have a [email protected], basically the same as a 8700k, and Im not upgrading for a few years yet as Ive gone off gamming lately. But I will always upgrade the gpu before cpu from now on, because once stung and all that.

Try it with your 8700K and see how it performs. See for yourself if you're getting the full benefit out of the 7900xtx. If you're unsure how to check for a bottleneck then we can help you.

How to find a bottleneck should be a sticky somewhere so people can learn and understand for themself when it's time to upgrade.

As others have said, hold off for now. Once your new graphics card is installed use MSI after burner or the radeon overlay to see how much your CPU is pegged during gaming sessions. Make sure all cores are visable as average CPU usage is useless.

Just for info. I did the jump. 8700k to a 13700K and then a 3080ti to a 4090. In the fs2020 thread someone mentioned they didn't see any jump with the 4090 until they upgraded the cup as well.

Heres my stock timespy scores between changes.

If you have decent graphics card then yes 100% I didn't think I would need to but defo get a lot more FPS in 4k with my new i9 13900k
Especially if you game at 4k , Big Jump in Flight simulator.
I didn't see any FPS change from 3080 to my 4090 until I upgraded my CPU in a lot of games if I am honest so ya it makes a difference.
