is it wrong that i cant sleep?

Obviously a major bummer that it went but, as you say, damn good that it was at the end of the time there and didn't go half way round the track - forking out for the recovery truck would have just rubbed salt in.

Will they recover the car back to the UK then?

Yup. He'll get a rental car or onward travel back to the UK as well.

BMW Assist = awesome. Shame it's £148 a year after the warranty expires.

That's bad luck :(

Do BMW honour the warrany even though it's been on track?

Are M5's a bit fragile on track? I seem to recall Spies other one dieing on track too (clutch?)

Hi there

Yes both Spie and another chap both had clutch failures on a track day. :(

Now looks like the new E60 M5 is not too happy to driven too hard on a track, pretty shocking really for what are M cars as you'd think they'd make them super strong and reliable to cope with the thrashing that a track day does to a car. You know the saying, the more gizmo and gadgets a car has the more there is to go wrong which is no doubt the case with the E60. :(

/Considers making smug comment about Germanic reliability.

:)

Nah, I'm not one to kick people when they're down (much). Sorry to hear about the gearbox woes TomO. Makes you wonder if a US spec one with the proper manual 6spd might be a better proposition for the track. Are BMW still not commenting on offering the manual 'box for the Euro/UK market?

Exactly what i was thinking, at the end of the day you don't buy an M car to potter around in, its built to be driven fast, shame some of the mechanics can't keep up :(

I must admit that I know nothing about the M5 but could the gearchange being put up to "level 5" (sounds very Gran Turismo :p ) have something to do with it?

I'm assuming that the level affects how hard the shifts are?

You'll get something decent from Enterprise if its a BMW Assist Job.

Unless you are under 23 in which case even if you have BMW Assist they give you a Vauxhall Meriva for insurance reasons. That made me emo :p

a 1.6 zafira! will be swapping it with something from the BMW dealership in the next day or two.

gearshift was set to level 3 or 4. i find level 5 and 6 so harsh that they sometimes unsettle the car - not really needed on the track!
