Is Kuala Lumpur as dull as it looks?

Can confirm, KL is pretty dull. We didn't even get to visit the top of the Petronas towers, as it was fully booked up on the two days we had there (poor planning on my part)

Langkawi was nice though, even though I heard a few people there refer to it as a "poor man's Bali".

It's a Muslim country so not many bars outside of hotels, though we found a few.

I've a couple of nights in Singapore in about 8 or 9 weeks, looks about as dull and even more expensive for a beer

I thought you've been to SE Asia a lot, can't believe you've never been to Singapore.

2 days is enough to see most of Singapore, but the place is mostly just malls, hawker centres and man made stuff like the man made beaches in Sentosa and the Jewel, Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands.

It's basically a great place to eat for cheap. Alcohol is expensive and not that much in terms of fun compared to Japan or even historical things to see as it was all jungle 100 years ago.

Singapore airport was pretty amazing compared to what we have

Though I could tell it's an expensive country from the pricing at the airport

Thanks for the info
If you're into your whiskey though, most of the places I went to allowed you to buy a bottle and keep it behind the bar.
seen that quite a lot in Asia

The best thing about Singapore is the food, the hawker centres. Don't bother with the drinks because they have very high tax so alcohol is not cheap there. In terms of malls and shopping, big famous malls is not where I would get stuff, it's the same stuff as a mall in the UK anywhere unless it's a local brand, with prices to match. If you go to a local mall, like not Marina Bay Sands Mall or on Orchard Road, then you might get a bargain here and there.

Anyway, Singapore, No.1 thing, is food. Taxi your way everywhere, they don't have Uber but they have an app call Grab. Grab taxi, Grab Food delivery etc. Or take the local MRT (tube), but for 2 people you might as well just taxi.

Since you've been to Thailand a lot, the weather isn't that much different, you'll be fine on that front. But things are more strict in Singapore, and remember no chewing gum!

I personally enjoy KL, but I see it from a different lens owing to the wife's family being from that part of the world. We do it with a different lens of course, as a family thing, eating, seeing sights, tourist attractions, immersion into the culture. It's all an experience, especially with children.

Weather can be somewhat overwhelming during certain seasons.

As mentioned Singapore is well worth a visit, I think if I could live in Singapore for a few years I'd be happy, I just really enjoy the atmosphere there.

100% agreed.

Our first day in KL we went out for an explore in what I would consider Asia appropriate clothing.

Went back to the hotel after about an hour to remove almost everything, have a shower and try again.

My GFs hair was literally dripping wet...

Yeah - it's only a quick thing if you aren't with mates. Check out the four floors, too. :D
Tut tut.

I've only been in Sing during the F1, 3 times I think, bit different then! The hawker markets and stuff are decent but overall it's pretty sterile.

Bangkok, Hanoi, Hong Kong are vastly more interesting places to visit.

Whaat? HK is awesome, it's got everything. Swanky bits. Dive bits. All kinds of markets. Amazing food scene. Great Music and arts scene. Beaches. Mountains. Sports. A short train ride to Shenzen.

Biased as I lived there, and tbh I don't know how much it has suffered since the great red curtain came down, but it's not comparable to soulless hubs like KL and Sing.

I thought Saigon was just a grubby soulless dive full of sex tourists like Phnom Pen. Hanoi has a lot more charm.
