Is Linkin Park "metal"?

When you're old like me you just call it Rock music.
In that category I put everything from Buddy Holly to Led Zeppelin to Sex Pistols to Slayer to Ghost.

I lost track of all the genres years ago. I know the point of the thread is due to a discussion between friends, but who really cares if a band is X or not? Would it maximise your enjoyment if you could slot it neatly into a category?

As has been said, that’s one of the really naff things about the general community who like heavier music, it comes across as elitist and something to beat others with if they don’t conform to someone’s own tastes, when really it doesn’t matter one jot.
Absolutely this.

I went to see Metallica in Dublin twenty something years ago with Linkin Park as the support act. They were booed off the stage and even had bottles thrown at them. Not because they weren’t playing well, but because they weren’t real metal. I’m not a huge fan of their music but it really was a pathetic display by quite a large proportion of the crowd.

Having debate with a friend whether Linkin Park is "metal".

I argue that it being "nu-metal" which is considered to be a sub genre of metal makes it a metal band.

He's argument is that the metal scene is divided on the subject and points me at articles such as this.

So please give me your opinions is Linkin Park "metal"?

Their first 2 albums I'd describe as nu-metal-hiphop

Their latest albums, who knows, some lame ****

You're going about this wrong. You need to start undermining his favourite band by saying they are manufactured pop created for 8yr olds or such.

This is one of those arguments that:
A) doesn’t matter
B) no one should care what the answer actually is because it’s utterly irrelevant

You either like the band or you don’t, whether it’s rock, metal, no-metal or tattooed on Taylor Swifts behind shouldn’t matter and doesn’t matter.

The fact of the matter is there are bands that don’t stick to one genre across their library and also mix genres on the same song, Linkin Park is one of those bands.

Makes me think of how my mother referred to every console as a Nintendo, be it a Playstation, Xbox, or anything else.

My Dad's Mum and an Uncle & Aunty thought music was just music so when they were told I had my first Dansette Mono record player in 1970 they would buy me an album - any album.
They usually went for the cheapest on the shelf and I could end up with Polish Polka Hits or BBC Effects.
I think I once had a Top Of The Pops Hit album - the older guys on here would remember them :)
This went on for years :)

This is class, its like a propper blind bag before its time. I bet youre obsessed with sounds of cities 1964-1974 or something obscure

We used to have an album reveal so there was quite a few of us who could experience it :)
Later on they would ask if I enjoyed their presents and I'd say "Yeah I played your BBC Sounds of Cities 1964 to 1974 between the new Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath albums" :)

Emo-alternative-pop is what I'd called them...
I'd never have considered them in the same bracket as korn or deftones when Hybrid Theory came out.

Been listening to a lot of Poison recently.

I guess it's Glam Metal, or Hair metal?

I like a lot of that stuff, Ratt, Motley Crue, Kiss, Winger, Skid Row etc. Love Steel Panther as well which is like an amalgamation of all of those.

I liked their first two albums (linkin park) those were decent, but if I'm honest they are not something I would frequently listen to these days.

I like the nu-metal term, i haven't seen it defined before and feel it fits well. I never really knew what certain bands/ albums could be identified as, so it helps.

I'm not a Linkin Park fan per se, but it's alright. As said, many bands have multiple albums that fit into differing categories.

I bet there's plenty of these elitist mindset individuals who don't even support the bands and just listen to stuff on spotify.

Yeah I've felt this way before, so insecure. Even looking in the mirror I can't seem to find myself. I'm not sure what it's like With You, but I think it comes down to a situation when you're tired of being what others want you to be, you're feeling so faithless and lost under the surface. You don't know what they're expecting of you, put under the pressure of walking in their shoes. It's like every step that you take is another mistake to them! You've become so numb you can't even feel can't feel them there, you've become become so tired but so much more aware. While becoming this all you want to do is be more like you and be less like them. Can't they see that they're smothering you? Holding too tightly, they must be afraid to lose control, and everything that they thought you would be has fallen apart right in front of them. Like I said before, every step that you take is another mistake to them, and every second you waste is more than you can take. The worst part is that you know you may end up failing too, but you know they were just like you with someone disappointed in them. If it were me, well I don't know if I could take it anymore, saying all the things I've said before. Sorry if none of the words made any sense, I like to think I'm never wrong but I just want to share what I've been through.

Linkin Park are in the rock genre, with a number of sub genres, Nu metal, alternative rock, electronic rock and a load more stuff, mainly on the rock side so classed in the rock genre.
