My zotac amp edition 1080 is hitting 82 degrees at 100% fan speed (done via custom curve) after playing battlefield 1 for 20 mins or so .
Was just wondering if this is normal ? I don't mind if the fans spin up at full speed as I game with headphones , I just don't want it to cause me any problems down the line when my rma has run out .
Basically is this normal or should I be returning the card ?

I wouldn't have the fans running at 100%. They're one of the first things to fail. Use a 1:1 ratio at most. Who knows, may even knock off a few degrees because the fans draw more power the faster they spin.

Other than that, I'd go with airflow too, or bad thermal paste application.

I'll try take the side of the case tonight . If it's the thermal paste should I re apply that or just send it back ? If it's airflow how would I go about improving this ? It already has the big fan on the front, I have them connected via the pwm module in the case and set it to pwm in the motherboard bios?

Well before we diagnose the case we'll have to rule out any issue with the GPU, Taking the side panel off should help.

Also what are the idle temps ?

As suggested above, definitely try with the side off. If its still running that hot with a supply of fresh cool air then there's a problem. If not, then its your case airflow. 80+ does seem high for just general use

I do think putting big cards with aftermarket coolers in small cases is a recipe for disaster. I suspect this is your problem.

Only real way to fix it is run with the side panel off. Or get a bigger case with better airflow. You could change the cooler on the gpu of course.

I'll have to try the side panel tonight see if it helps .. I think off the top of my head it sits at about 38 degrees idle with 40% fan speed.

I thought the case would be decent enough as it isn't actually that small

Could it be anything to do with the fact I have an aio cooler , with the 2 120mm fans for the radiator and all the case fans plugged into the pwm module on the case ? As I'm guessing the case fans will only spin up as and when the cpu requires it ? :(

Could very well be, AIO fans are designed to deliver better static pressure rather then higher airflow which you have on normal case fans. There's not a big difference TBH but with your smaller case, big video card, static pressure fans it points towards an airflow issue.

Do you have any spare fan mounting points in your case to get extra air in there?

If it is an airflow issue, do you have other headers you could connect your case fans to? Maybe try running them on a more aggressive fan curve.

Would I have to set this fan curve through bios ? I will have spare headers as all my fans are currently plugged into the phanteks Pwm fan hub

Maybe the fan hub doesn't have enough power to power all the fans so they are running slower than they should be. Putting them on the mobo will rule this out
