hi,

was just talking to my mate about how my pc is randomly crashing, freezing even when im just browsing the internet and playing fm2006. then he said that this is definitely a problem with my cpu(amd x2 4400+) as dual cores have problems with nforce4 chips(i have an epox mobo) so thats why im getting all these random crashing and freezing.

is what my mate saying right?

cheers

ahh so my mates just telling porkies then?
now i need to find out what the real reason to why me pc freezes randomly :(

Usual things applies when u get freezing/lockups

Check cpu/system temps, make sure the heatsink is seated well and not too much thermal paste, check the systems cool with 1-2 case fans even...

Update mainboard bios, check your power supply is rated well and providing enought power to the system, heck some guys forget to plug in the P4 plug !

Also to note its usualy the memory that can cause freezing/crashing, so memtest or running 3dmark is a good test for stability.

A good format and reload of XP freshly never goes amiss!

All the dual core cpus have problems with nearly all motherboards until you update to a bios that is designed to work with them. (As do single core venice\sandiego cpus).

Sounds to me like your mate isn't as clever as he would have you belive - you know those type of people that have a "solution" to everything, even things that they have never even heard of. No offense we're all like it at times even if its not on purpose.

Ummm anyways, if I were you I'd try underclocking the chip and see what happens? Are you running at stock speeds etc etc? Is ya ram outta spec?

More info would help :)

how will underclocking solve this problem if its not an overheating issue. if his boards current bios is not compatible with the X2 cpu then he needs to update the bios, underclocking it will not solve the problem. you must be a real fool to even suggest that option.

hi,
well i built my rig(see sig) at around august and when i built that i did update the bios as my pc can now see my cpu is a dual core.

i havent been oc and i have two fans running and on the mobo it indicates my pc temperature is 40degrees.

and i recently installed a hiper type-r 580w psu so that should be fine. so do you think this is more of a RAM problem?its nothing to do with the cpu?or hard drive is it?

cheers for you help so far.

only way your going to find out is to test it. if you built the computer yourself then you must be real stupid to even put an operating system on it without running a memory test prior to the install.
first rule of any home made system is to run memtests before doing anything else.

sorry but i didnt realise i had to run memtest before installing a operating system, ive built my mates rig and i didnt run a memtest yet he has no problem in fact my uncle builds loads of pc and he never bothered to run memtest yet he tells me theres no problems with his pcs.

i am grateful for you helping me but is it necessary to say i must be real stupid because i did not run a memory test prior to install?

Ignore him - ive never ran a memory test prior to ANY install that ive built.

Mine never has and has always ran just fine.

You aint stupid mate at all.

Confirmed, i've never done it before. I think Cyber-Mav needs a hug, two insults in one thread.

have to agree, there's no reason to run memtest before an install imo - memtest is there to find errors or stress testing.

BIIIIG hug to cyber-mav

Anyway back on topic, have you sorted it yet mate? Done the usual as Highlander and other suggested? checked for a BIOS update? You re-installed the OS? you sure all the neccessary plugs are plugged into the motherboard securely? have you stripped the machine and tried running with minimum spec? (mem/cpu/gfx/hdd)? with everything set to default/or safe settings?

i only run memtest if the windows install fails...

however, i have seen people saying that after doing the whole nf4 x2 thing they wouldnt do it again, and have choosen ati chipsets instead - but only about 2 or 3 - your freind should run some tests on his computer and make shure hes not blaming the chipset for a fault caused by something else

hi,
ive checked all the plugs needed to go to the mobo.i havent checked for a BIOS update or strip the machine as i havent had the time for the past 2 days. i dont really want to reinstall the os since i have quite a few programs so to install it back it would take some time.

there seems to be more than one memtest program so which one is it that most people use?can you link me please?

why wouldnt people do the x2 and nf4 thinh again?whats supposedly the problem with these two's compatibility?
