however, i have seen people saying that after doing the whole nf4 x2 thing they wouldnt do it again, and have choosen ati chipsets instead - but only about 2 or 3 - your freind should run some tests on his computer and make shure hes not blaming the chipset for a fault caused by something else

Take a look here might help some :)

only way your going to find out is to test it. if you built the computer yourself then you must be real stupid to even put an operating system on it without running a memory test prior to the install.
first rule of any home made system is to run memtests before doing anything else.

u install the operating system with everything at default speeds/settings. you dont have to run memtest lol

wow, talk about BS overload, i have construted a large number of computers and have NEVER ran any memtest or anything like that prior to installation of the os, and you know what? they all still work 100% stable to this day.
it might be your rule for your unstable computer biulds but 95% of the time there is no need.

dont post if you cant be bothered to read the thread properly, but i do agree in this case it sounds like you need the dual core drivers.
good call anyway elite. :)

Just had one weird issue recently and I could not cure the PC from just hanging.

Cant honestly say I have fixed it, but if I told you that the LAN Drivers were stopping the SoundCards Midi/Joy port from working, and this in turn was causing it to hang when it accessed any networking ( i.e tried to log on to the internet ) , you would call me thick, but to be honest with you, I really do think that was it??

trying to do any form of networking would hang the system, and resinatlling the soundCard allowed it to connect but then it was not stable, reinstalling the drivers for the LAN also helped, but then killed off the Joystick port, but allowed me to connect, even though my Modem is USB???? - End of the day, I resorted back to the original CD for the Mobo and hey presto, it then found the soundcard and the USB Modem and its been fine since?

Sometimes just having newer drivers means jack schitt and you sometimes might be worth trying out the older "Tried and tested" drivers.

hi,
cheers for the help so far guys.i dont know if i have had the dual amd cpu xp driver installed or not.how do i find out?do i download from the MS site or straight from Windows Update?

Also i have no idea if i have which version of nVidia driver..think im going install 6.7 and see what else happens...will post back later...cheers

Sometimes "CAS2" ram won't run at CAS2 on Athlon64s. Try running it at CAS3 and see if that sorts the issue. It's a quick fix and may not be the actual cure, but something to try. My Corsair ram is real fussy atm, (no CAS2 but I do get CAS2.5) but too little time to sort out the finer ram timings.

thats incorrect, theres no issue with cas 2 ram on ath 64's at all. ok i can't quite remember but think the xms pro mem you have is tccd memory chips, which means at any semi high fsb(215-220+ prob, sometimes less) you won't be able to run cas 2 anyway, no tccd will.

as for cpu driver, c rap, you don't need it in any way or form at all.

downloads super pi, anyversion that comes up, run the 1mb version(very easy to work out program) if there is a memory error basically it will error and not complete the calculation, very very VERY rarely will in windows super pi pass if memory is at fault in any way.

trying newer drivers is never a bad idea, newer gfx drivers too. check error logs see if anythings writen, is it deffo always just freezing or sometimes blue screening? done a virus check lately? made sure chipset fan is spinning(if there is one).

Just a note about RAM on the AMD64's...

I got 2x512MB Corsair XMS4400 TwinX...

I also have 2x512MB Corsair 4400 Platinum...

In the DFI LanParty, the Platinum was failing so badly, it was impossible to do anything... The TwinX in the MSI was fine, so, I tried that in the DFI and it was ok, and then I tried the Platinum in the MSI and that too was ok.

Basically, this is how it is:-

MSI = TwinX or Platinum

DFI = TwinX ok, but not Platinum

Why is that?

Timings etc are absolutely identical ( 2.5-4-4-8 @ 1T ) and on both sets, I have hit 280FSB before I have needed to over volt, and 300FSB is easy to achieve

And if its any help, I have taken all these sticks of RAM to 300FSB and its been fine at CAS2.5 @ 1T

I have Corsair XMS Pro 3200. That won't run at CAS2 in my system. The SPD tables say CAS3, but the description says CAS2. Nothing I can do will make it run at CAS2 in 1T. It doesn't bother me too much as I knew it probably wouldn't. I'm certain that it used to state it on Corsair's website too (but can't find it now - a little note under one of the tables of specs).

I do actually run memtest sometimes before install - only about 10 loops of test 5 = 8 minutes. But tbh, you would know if the RAM was borked because when setup copies files and gets lots of errors, 9 times out of 10 it's the RAM. It's not necessary but calling someone stupid is totally uncalled for should they not do it.

AMD drivers - download the dual core driver from AMD. This adds /usepmtimer to the boot.ini which has some compatibility fixes for games etc.

I play FM06 on my overclocked X2 4400+ and never crash (oh and I own an nF4 board) so your friend is wrong. Sometime else is up there.

Yep i've had the issue with loads of files failing to copy due to ram. Memtest pointed out the problem, but i wouldnt have thought to run memtest before installing and still doubt i will in the future as the install failing, files not being copied etc is pretty indicative in itself. Well it's indicative to me now only after having been through it ;)

make sure you don't have cool & quiet on in the bios, I believe that sends x2s potty.

Nf4 and x2 here no probs though, its defo something you can fix.

Good luck!
