So i had a new window installed in a box room yesterday.

about 36hours ago to be precise.

It's got toughend glass and double laminate interlayers.
it has the standard 2 openings at the top so not getting out if theres a fire lol.

The last thing the fitter said was don't open it for a day as the silicone needs to dry so i am wondering if its likely to be 100% dry now?

Illegal window?

Damn foreign windows, coming over here, stealing window openings away from British windows. Send it back!

36h is more than a day. a day is 24h btw.

you could have opened it this morning. Owned. Noob L2windowtime

36 hours is more than 24 (as in a day). Is maths really that hard? As for being illegal, well if the box room is classed as a utility room...then no. If a bedroom, then yes.

Q2. Do all the rooms in my house have to have escape windows?

A. For two storey houses, escape windows have to be provided to habitable rooms (lounge, study, dining room, bedroom, playroom, etc. but not a kitchen, utility room, bathroom or WC). Alternatively, on the ground floor, the means of escape can be via an internal door which opens onto a hall leading to the entrance or other suitable exit or can be via a window of the correct minimum size or a door leading directly to outside.

I actually smiled at that.

The silicone sealant will have formed a skin on the outside within about 30 minutes, the rest of the time is just to allow the rest to set properly, you will be fine now.

The window should be structurally solid without the mastic unless you have sg curtain walling in your house.

You should be able to open it straight away.

Screams cowboy to me.

This! If anything i'd leave it for 30 mins for the silicone to skin over, but there should be no visible movement in the frame.

Not a great idea fitting a house full of windows and then telling the customer not to open any windows for 36 hours lol. The fumes are very strong if they use acetoxy cure silicone.

I've seen windows fitted with expanding foam and mastic only no structural fixings.

Foam will actually hold the window firmly in place, more so than mechanical fixings. But the problem with just using foam is that a burglar can take the window out using a pad saw or hacksaw blade. Have seen this happen before. We usually put 6 concrete bolts in and then foam around as well.

update: apparently my brother had overheard what the fitter said and he actualy said leave it a couple hours..

DOH @ me !.

anyway... I've noticed an improvement in the noise reduction
due to the glass used.

they used 6.4mm and double laminate what ever that is? lol.
