Any mileage in getting one of those highpoint RAID cards ?

It would move the raid processing from the CPU and onto specialsed hardware which is the normal method in a server environment......

Dunno if thats going to translate into better performance for a gaming workstation though.

A decent Raid card should make a difference but at the level we are talking about I doubt it will make any noticeable difference to make the price worthwhile.

Hopefully rpstewart or someone else will come along to confirm or deny the truth of my guesswork. :)

What RAID level?

Unless you are talking about RAID5, 6, 10 (10 is NOT 0+1, 10 is 1+0) or 50, then I see no reason for a hardware RAID card (or accelerator in the case of Highpoints).

RAID0, 1 and 0+1 work perfectly fine on an onboard controller and there is no point spending any money for these.

I run a highpoint 2310 for Raid 5 (3*320GB), its not a true hardware solution, rather an accelerator as Smids just pointed out. I'd recommend it for R5, but it does depend on your requirements.

If you are looking for real decent RAID cards, you should look at cards from AMCC 3ware or Areca, although some of them can be a bit expensive, they (especially from Areca) perform very well, but for most is probably overkill.

I use the ICH7R cont. and find it meets my needs. :)
