Is "PC Gaming" a different thing nowadays?

The pc is still more versatile for me. I need a pc for work and general use anyway, so my PC is a home media hifi hub.
I have a TV and a seperate monitor in my front room..plus it's plugged into a decent hi fi with seperate speakers for the monitor.
The tv is used for TV and playing/arcade games, with a wireless pad.
The monitor/desl/pc Station is used for work or proper games where a pad would be useless, such as FPS and RTS games.

If the PC is years ahead of consoles, then how can they be the same thing?

Consoles will always be playing catchup, but then they have their own benefits for that market.

Mods and KB/mouse for fps games were the two main things that set the PC apart for me. Now I think some console games support kb/mouse? And i'm guessing the next gen consoles will further support it. Mods for PC are slowly being destroyed by greedy corps and turned into player made dlc.

Along with the recent Epic exclusivity crap and ridiculous hardware prices, I think my next gaming platform will be the PS5. I skipped the PS4, so with the PS5 having backwards compatibility i'll have a ton of games to play on it.

The same thing? No. Mouse, keyboard, gsync / freesync and high fps and refresh rates are all defining differences to me. And then there are the million other things that you can use a PC for that consoles cannot do. They’re different beasts that share a few things in common.

I only really got my PC to play 360/Xbone games at a better quality (i.e. 4K60) but if the next-gen systems do this then I think I'll be jumping ship again. £500 for the PS5 instead of £500 for a new GPU.

There are numerous differences on PC but I don't take advantage of any of them.

Mouse keyboard? No, I use a controller.
Gsync, >60fps? No because I use a television.
Mods? Nah. Too much faffing about.
And the only other thing I use my PC for is web browsing which can be done on an iPad.

I think with PS5 my PC gaming days are done, hell i am still running 2500k and a 1080 (580s died). With in built keyboard and mouse support from day 1 for next gen consoles the rampent cheating of PC gaming (yes its not perfect on console either) then PC games are going to have to be very very special indeed.

So aside from the few gems you get every couple of years (that will end up on console anyway) and you enjoy spending money on keeping your rig tip top, i see very little future a gaming PC and it will become even more niche and expensive than it is now.

PC gaming which the biggest platform of the biggest entertainment industry is now a niche?

Are next gen consoles getting KB and M support from day one? I was under the impression that Sony and Microsoft didn't want to divide users by officially allowing KB and M?

I cannot enjoy "couch" gaming, call me odd :D

My post was not about PC Vs Console gaming, more about the differential between PC and console gaming a lot less than it used to be, heck, we barely have community dedicated servers anymore.

Is PC gaming and Console gaming now just "gaming" when all said and done?

The only game I play now without a gamepad is Kenshi, and I would use it in that if it was possible. You're pretty spot on that PC gaming nowadays is just the same as consoles just with better graphics and framerate, at least for some.

PC Gaming - The only place I can play indie games. I love me the smaller releases. The big triple A games all have their equivalent versions on console so the lines are definitely blurred there.

All the freebies on Itch.io or similar. Or the games for a few bucks on steam. I follow someone called Nookrium on YT and I pretty much end up getting most games he reviews if they're in a genre I like.

The gap between the two is closer now than it probably has been before but the performance gap is what still keeps me on PC. If consoles were able to play everything at least 60fps I'd be game. First world problem, I know, but I really can't stand 30fps.

It's a first world problem for sure but games are entertainment and I want to experience my entertainment correctly (for me). That and my thumbs are useless at aiming

Hmmm, I don't think so at all. The strengths of the PC mostly remain. Certain games like grand strategy games just can't be done adequately on consoles. I also prefer FPS on PC. Perhaps that's just due to my PC origins, but a mouse with no acceleration and adaptable sensitivity is so different to using a control pad with aim assist. That said, it's been interesting to see Indie games now really taking off on consoles in this generation. Indie games are just perfect for the Switch.

For me if the PS5 really does have Zen2 from the get go i'll be watching it closely. And then who knows what MS will cook up. It still hangs in the balance as TVs are yet to hit 120hz native and it would be nice to get Ultrawide support but that in it self is a niche somewhat. But all things considered nobody is pushing hardware on PC and all we get is console ports where some mistakes are glaringly obvious. I was dissapointed by metro exodus in that regard as they got lazy on some areas and let things slide.

Devs don't want to cater for multiple hardware configs anymore it just takes up time. I think i will consider PS5 as my departing gift from PC. Then change my mind 3 weeks later. You know how it goes :D

A few things puts me off consoles.. 30fps in the majority of games, cant disable motion blur or other post processing effects, no kb/m support, paid online, expensive games.

I had a PS4 a couple years ago but I sold it as it just gathered dust after I played the 5 or so worthwhile exclusives and most AAA console games that are released now I have no interest in as they all seem to play the same (Third person, heavily scripted/cinematic).

Cant go back and play older games on a whim either, the past few weeks i've been playing battlefield 3 which is surprisingly still alive and has lots of full servers. looks fantastic for such an old game at 1440p. Cant really do that with consoles, once the new one is out the older ones online games are dead and long forgotten.

That's the thing. I've spent many years watching Digital Foundry analysis and 99% of the time, I'd never spot the differences between console and PC versions of the same game (especially with the Xbox One X). The only real difference between the two is the frame rate and being able to choose your resolution on PC (the latter now being a bit moot as the Xbox One X is near 4K most of the time).

The problem I have is I am never happy with what I've got. For years I wanted a gaming PC, bought one and now a year later I'm bored with it and itching to buy new tech which is why I want the next gen to start already.
