Is Plex still a thing?

Plex has just announced price increases coming on the 29th of April:

Monthly: $6.99
Yearly: $69.99
Lifetime: $249.99
*Exact pricing in other currencies may vary.

I was planning to hold out for the next promotion where they discount the lifetime pass, but I'm now thinking the £95 will probably become the discounted price, so I might as well go for it.

Never mind the Plex Pass price increase.

This is the big bit.

Upcoming Change to Remote Playback for Personal Media

We are also changing how remote playback works for streaming personal media (that is, playback when not on the same local network as the server). The reality is that we need more resources to continue putting forth the best personal media experience, and as a result, we will no longer offer remote playback as a free feature. This—alongside the new Plex Pass pricing—will help provide those resources. This change will apply to the future release of our new Plex experience for mobile and other platforms.

£79.16 in 2020. Use it every day so its been money well spent.

I really should start charging folk at my work who use it mind you. I could introduce a charge everytime I get whatsapp asking me to put some drivel reality tv show or god awful movie on it!

Now that is value right there. Mind you £33 in 2014 could have paid to heat my flat at the time for a month. Need a bank loan nowadays!

From what I can remember, that was the original price and I got in just before the first big hike.

Got it running on an old Dell optiplex running Ubuntu last night. Relatively painless setup; there's some good instructions out there.

The only problem I ran into was with directory permissions. But that's my lack of Linux knowledge rather than a Plex issue.

Mine is purely going to be used at home as an easy way to watch old DVDs and Blu-rays.

There's no need for mine to be on 24/7 as I'll only be watching on the odd occasion I have a free evening.

It's working exactly as I want it to. Just need to get a bigger drive and get some backups in order.
