Is Plex still a thing?

I've had no issues with the Apple TV app even with the largest of files, the only reason I use Infuse is when I want the true soundtrack.
Mine has struggled with Sports and Movie - files around the 60 - 80 Gig mark. Only certain ones its not a hard rule if its 60 gig its going to struggle. Its maybe happened 5 - 6 times in the last 3 years not frequent or annoying enough for me to investigate

I've not experienced that, which would suggest it's something related to your setup/hardware, rather than the native app. My boy watches several films which are at least that size using the default Plex app (since Infuse doesn't seem to support age restrictions on libraries) with no issues.

It’s moved across 3 different hardware setups. I was led to believe it was HDR/Apple TV related.

As I said it’s rare so I haven’t had the appetite to look into it.

1 min google suggests Plex client inefficient use of the Apple TV hardware and suggests infuse app which uses the hardware more efficiently :p

My biggest gripe with Plex is the new UI on the Firestick app, I really cant gel with it at all. I have been recommended Plezy as an alternate way to consume content from my Plex server however whilst its far from terrible, you can tell its still relatively under developed in its current state.
I'm not sure the original Plex plugin for Kodi still works, as having a quick look online I'm seeing suggestions to use PM4K. But either way, I'd look at those as you can - at least you could when I last tried it a while back - set Kodi to launch straight into the plugin.

Only reason it wasn't my preferred solution was because I didn't use plex on the firestick, and if you exited the plugin you were back into Kodi and I didn't want people to get thrown by that. Otherwise, in my experience, it had less issues than the Plex app.

just to give balance our house has several of the latest Apple TV 4K devices - and anything on Plex is absolutely flawless.

My unraid box and network is probably 'not standard' though (Huge unifi install, and a 14700k with 64GB RAM, M2 SSD Storage Array, etc)

Very similar to my setup.

Next time it happens I’ll make a point of figuring it out.

Interesting.

They've been saying for an eternity that the Apple TV App would get updated to use Metal (?) I think. No idea what the latest is on that though.

Couldn't figure out why a movie I was watching last night was stuttering. Turns out it hit the max bandwidth of the 100mb network connection.
When will we see 1gb RJ45 on TVs I wonder.

See if your tv has a USB port that you can use a USB to ethernet adapter on it. Assuming it supports it. Or wifi if your signal is strong enough.

Doesn't support it. Had to reduce the bitrate, trying to reduce WiFi devices. Just have to remember to keep the total bitrate below the 100mb.

Living and working in tech, I tend to keep up to date with stuff like this but honestly, I had no idea there was even a new UI being pushed for Plex, let alone the fact they've reversed it as per the link above! lol I've been a Plex user for eons, with lifetime Plex pass. For me, it's been one of the most robust and reliable things I've ever used. Literally the Plex Server app gets no attention bar the occasional update applied via the Shield Pro Plex app when prompted, and just sits there 24/7 dishing out content when needed. Even the Plex app on the Shield has been damn reliable for me and my family also. It's a part of daily life and has been for years. I am surprised to hear of so many people having issues with any of this. I'm sure there are valid reasons for all of it, or perhaps I've just lucky, but it's one of them things I don't even think about anymore. I turn the TV on, Plex TV is usually already open, I select what I want to watch and done.

Exactly this. I have a whole network of remote users on mine. For years and years it “just works”

it seems that there’s now a bit of a disconnect between the server and front end experiences though I have to say that once I’ve set the Plex app up the way I want it, it works fine. I only use the mobile versions of the app if that makes a difference, as I now use Infuse on my Apple TV. This is because a couple of years ago Plex was struggling with HDR and Atmos whilst Infuse wasn’t. Don’t know if this is still the case but I like Infuse so I’m sticking with it

I’ve just built a new servarr stack on my new Mac. Previously the apps were installed directly and managing them all was a real pain. I used tailscale to access from the outside world. The servarr apps wouldn’t update when requested so I had to redownload and self sign them. I also handled content requests manually.

The new setup is containerised apart from Plex but it’s just not some Docker installs on Orbstack. I’ve put Orbstack into Kubernetes mode and orchestrate the deployments using Argo, with configuration stored in Git and renovate to handle updates. It’s so nice watching everything self update when new versions are released. I did configure traefik to use mTLS but the certs were annoying to install on devices and still had to port forward 443. I then chose the ChrisD approach and setup cloudflared instead. It’s seriously nice now!

Nice. I’ve been thinking of moving over to k8s rather than traditional containers, just a case of finding the time. You should disable caching in Cloudflare for Plex if you hadn’t already.

Does anybody have an idea of how Plex handles with slower upload bandwidth? I have transcoding switched off, I never like using it as I find it sometimes transcodes when it doesn't need to and I prefer quality. Currently I have 2.5gb up/down so bandwidth has never been a concern, but I'm moving house in a few weeks and the new house only has Openreach so I'll be stuck with 110mb upload. For me personally it won't be an issue because I'll be at home, but I have a few family members and friends with access and the majority of content is in 4K HDR. Average bitrate can vary anywhere from 10mbs to 40mbs so I'm assuming it will be ok as long as only 2 or 3 people are watching something at the same time. Am I right in this? Some content will likely have spikes a lot higher than the 40mbs average, possibly spikes over 100mb. Will this cause a problem? Is there anybody else on Openreach who has transcoding switched off and if so, have you had issues?
