Is Plex still a thing?

Windows 10, Dell T20 Xeon works well as a Plex server, and the Pi3 running RasPlex is a great client. Unfortunately the TBS 6904 in the server no longer works with the Pi for Freesat.

I’ve moved from Plex to Jellyfin. The main reasons being, it runs a lot faster, it runs well without an internet connection and it’s not full of bloat.

I find Jellyfin plays UHD content far more reliably than Plex ever did - so I stuck with it, and completely removed Plex

I use a QNap NAS as my plex server. No bloat there and hooks into my Amazon Dots fine. You also get the choice of a browser player or an actual desktop app.

I've just retired our wired plex server - big network cabinet and rack mounted server - with a miniPC and NAS box.

I had a go at running it all on Debian and Dockers but could not get Plex to find the the folders on the NAS. After many hours I gave up and put Win11 on.

Got some of the arr's working too which is cool. Not sure how much I'll actually use them.

Have Plex as a backend and use Infuse on my Apple TV to watch things. 4K HDR with Atmos works perfectly well.

Plex are working on an updated app which should play upto 4K HDR with Atmos. Much needed in my opinion as it should’ve been here a couple of years ago.

For me the Plex backend works very well but the front end apps need a lot of work and are outdated.

I've found that Plex functionality/efficiency seems to vary vastly between devices. I use a Dell T20 Xeon, Win11, 32GB RAM & TBS6904 as a Plex server.

It will stream 1080P perfectly to a Pi3 (RasPlex client), but wired to an Amazon Fire TV random buffering, the same applies to other devices running Plex.

Unless I'm missing something blatantly obvious, it also seems like TV streaming of FreeSat TBS6904 functionality has been removed from Rasplex, slightly inconvenient as I had intended on using a spare Pi in the kitchen for media/TV streaming.

It may also depend on whether Plex is having to transcode files. The main reason I bought an Apple TV and then Infuse was that no transcoding is required is 4K HDR, Atmos and subtitle files. In a lot of other cases (including using the Plex app on Apple TV) transcoding is required for sound and subtitles at least. Theoretically, this doesn’t have much overhead but I’d rather just plain not have any transcoding.
