Aaah! I'm on Windows!
What do you think, is PowerPC hot or cold.

This might be the cause of the overheating problems on the XBox 360 :(

The source of the XBox 360 RROD (red ring of death) is actually the ATI GPU. It's 90nm and has a inaffective heatsink/fan. The motherboard warps under the heat and then the GPU "pops" out of the motherboard.

Microsoft released an updated motherboard called "Falcon" a little while ago that updated the CPU to 65nm from 90nm but not the GPU. They are releasing a further updated motherboard called "Valhalla" in September which will update the GPU to 65nm.

Now that means it has taken Microsoft 3 years to fix the issues on the 360. Now ATI have had 55nm GPUs since November at least last year, so there is absolutely no excuse for Microsoft to take so long.

I am on my 6th 360 since launch. My brother is on his 5th.

gotta love microsoft for shipping a badly designed console, kudos to them, me mates 360 just died on sunday, and other friend is on his fourth, im still on first PS3, one thing i always wondered, the xbox has the power brick, the wii has a smaller power brick, the PS3 has no power brick, how they manage that?

The PSU is internal.

It will probably be removed when they design PSThree to save space.

so shouldn't microsoft be scratching there heads, sony developed a quieter, more reliable and more powerful console, with an internal power brick, the console itself is only marginally bigger than the 360, witchcraft or something? kudos to sony for developing a sturdy console :)

It's because the PS3 has a huge heatsink/fan assembly (140mm). They have also been much quicker to adopt 65nm.

I wouldn't say the PS3 is better than the 360 - they are very similiar graphics wise.

I've got a free upgrade to an Elite and a copy of Bioshock for £10 because the shop refunded my original purchase. Not a great consilation considering I've had to take it back so many times, including my brothers.

yeah i know, graphically there pretty similar, though on paper the PS3 is the more capable machine, i don't think we've seen all its capable of yet, the thing i was trying to say is its a better machine technically, since it doesn't break and its not noisy as hell :)

Everyone I know with a 360 has had theirs returned. I dont know where microsoft get the low 16.4% failure rate from. Since everyone you speak to seems to have returned theirs.

Everyone I know in RL that has had a 360 (at least 15 people) have not had to return a single 360...so it works both ways...

Anyway, I don't think this is the right forum for this kind of discussion :p.

Given that the PS3 came out a year later than 360 I find it surprising that it's not more architecturally advanced. It seems that the only advances are a better thermal design and blu-ray.

I think Sony must have learned some lessons from PS2. The earlier models seemed to have a high failure rate. Several of my friends were on their 2nd or 3rd console a few years ago.

Apparently there were issues shrinking the EDRAM, as the GPU itself, could have gone 65nm ages ago, but it caused problems with the EDRAM on the same die.

Also I believe Sony spent like twice what any normal OEM spends to get a small, powerful, stable and internal PSU. That's why and how they managed it. It's all down to cost. MX could have managed it too probably, but they tried to cut corners (not that the brick is a corner too far obviously, as not many bricks have been faulty).

im on my second xbox and its been perfectly fine.

people blow this **** all out of proportion.

sorry but that is such a fictional statement, i have five mates who have xbox 360s, and ALL of them have had one or more hardware failures, three of them RROD and the other two simply ceased working all together, everyone i know with a PS3 has had no problems with them, overheating, breaking down, so how can you say its blown out of proportion, surely the sheer number of people complaining on forums and other places online about there xbox breaking says it all, microsoft screwed up, sony didn't

how is it a fictional statement?

stop being such a rodhead. yeah, so they have had a fair few hardware failures? and they've spent a lot of money replacing them all. and i have an xbox that works. and i can play games on it i like to play. and i dont have to live my life in Fanboy colours simply because it gives me something to argue about.

You calling him a fanboy is hilarious. Your sticking up for Microsoft despite the fact that they have a very noisy, very hot and very unreliable console. And then having the cheek to call him a fanboy because he points out how loads of his freinds have 360's that have died (not to forget the 1 in 6 failure rate)

Fanboy.....

I shall point out that I have a 360, and am no means a PS3 fanboy.
Mine is yet to break, but it is loud, and hot. And very much not as polished as the PS3 in terms of quality.
However I bought it as I couldn't afford a PS3 and they're aren't enough games out yet to justify it.

have a word with yourself mate, arguing about such trivial matters isn't really worth the effort.

they may have a very noise, very hot and very unreliable console. but i still play it more than my PS3, which has had nowt but Blu-Rays in it since i bought it.
