Is Q6600 processor 64 bit OS friendly?

When I am trying to get the 64 bit OS running properly, I am restricting myself to only the one drive, or occasionaly, two drives.

When I run a 32 bit system, I run a total of 8 drives if I include the usb drives, and have no problems at all. 32 bit runs very fast and smooth.

My power supply is 500 watt. I have been debating whether to replace that with a larger one for some time.

I realise that a 32 bit system only utiles 3. something of the total 8 gig ram, and that a 64 bit utilises all or almost all of the 8gig ram.

I had a problem with memory a while ago. Sometimes mobo's don't give memory enough volts. Perhaps check the manufacturer's specs and take the memory volts off auto and set it manually. Plus, because you're using all your memory slots you may need to give the controller a bump (.01V or so). Could it be power issues generally - ie is your PSU up to it? You've a lot of kit in there.

I am running Memtest86 + V2.10 again, and can see that my ram is rated as>

DDR649 / cas: 4-4-4-10 / dual channel.

According to specs, it should be DDR II - 800 / cas: 5-5-5-15.

Does this indicate somethng is wrong?

What frequency does the Memory tab of CPU-Z say? If it says 324mhz then you'll need to manually up the memory speed/ratio in the BIOS to get it to run around 800mhz/400mhz

324mhz!

If I go not much higher than that, the computer will boot over and over.

I am brand new to overclocking, so far, I have only adjusted the cpu frequency and achieved 2.92 Ghz with my Q6600.

I have yet to attempt any adjustment of voltages.

max temp on an of the 4 cores is 44C. I will be getting a decent cooler soon.

By the way.... Just in case you are thinking that my overclocking attempt is causing the problem with a sluggish 64 bit system..... I was running 64 bit without oc. What I am doing now is with a 32 bit OS.

The board has the P965 chipset IIRC, and therefore ~3ghz may well be the limit.

Have you set the correct voltage for your memory?

You'll probably have to hike up the northbridge/MCH voltage to get the quad to 3ghz, especially with 8gb of memory.

When trying to run xp pro 64, I think 7. something of ram was showing.

Only 3. something in 32 bit of course.

As I am a comlete newbie to OC, can you tell me what I should be looking to adjust and what to?

The settings that I and Cob are referring to are found in the BIOS. I'm not familiar with ASrock mobos however, you should be looking for something like DDR voltage. Take that off auto, and put 2.0, or 2.1 depending on what the manufacturer says is the correct voltage.
As for the northbridge and MCH, again up the volts by .01 or whatever the smallest increment is.
Regards

In my bios I have the following settings>

VCCM Voltage = High
VDDQ Voltage = Low
ICH8 Voltage = Low
VTT Voltage = High

DIMM 1N MODE = Disabled

It is looking very much that you were correct and that the problem was the RAID/AHCI drivers.

I installed (as instructed by the manual) the Raid drivers that come on the support CD when installing the OS.

I also tried the drivers you advised, but same problem.

After losing much hair and kicking both of my cats in frustration many times, I found Some Raid drivers on the mobo web site that appeared to be a much smaller file than the one that came on my support CD. I did a reformat and installed them when reinstalling the XP Pro 64 bit OS.

It seems to have fixed my problem, so far!

I say so far, because I want more time to be sure. The problem was sometimes intermittent, hence my inability to accept the problem is now past.

But looking good so far.

I shall give it a few days, then attempt an overclock.

Sounds like a problem I had. Turned out the problem was the RAID/AHCI drivers that were causing the problem.

Try these drivers from intel http://downloadcenter.intel.com/fil...dows+Vista*+64&lang=eng&strOSs=150&submit=Go!

Good luck
