Is the 10700k actually good value now? VS Ryzen 5000

I'm wanting to do a CPU upgrade ideally before Cyberpunk and to go along with a 3080 (Still waiting).

At the moment I'm torn between a 10700k and a Ryzen 5800x. The 5900x and 5950x are more than I wanted to pay.

However, with the 5800x at £428.99 I cant help but look at the 10700k as better value at £359.99. The 10700k also has the advantage of being able source easily in the next few weeks.

I've tried to consider the 3700x, but don't feel it offers enough of an upgrade from a 7700k in gaming.

Thoughts?

Maybe, we just don’t know yet. On paper the 5600X could beat the 10700, and the 5800X beat the 10900.

True.... im just impatient and trying to read between the lines with the benchmarks showed by AMD.

I'd be surprised if the 5800x beats the 10700k in gaming.

The upgrade itch is real. I could buy a 10700k right now !

Don't think it makes much difference which one you opt for, other than the initial costs being very slightly different. If the 5800X is faster, then how much faster, and at what and in what situations? The benefit of the AMD platform is in the long term, no need to swap CPU to get PCI-E 4.0 if it becomes a requirement for getting a better gaming experience, and the options for adding more internal expansions due to this as well. You can also sell the Far Cry 6 code for £25-30 that you get with the AMD CPU if you don't want it.

I don't envy people in your position, but I'd say taking a platform cost of an extra 5-10% over several years isn't too hard to deal with, I'd say people usually waste more by not shopping around and just clicking buy and being done with it.

From what we know so far the top three gaming chips will be the 5800X, 5900X and 5950X

Renoir with nerfed memory vs 10700K

I fail to see the logic here. The 10700k becomes good value just because AMD releases something more expensive? Would the 2080ti have been a bargain if AMD released something for £2000?

that..

also .. lets wait and see what they really have to offer..
as much as I want them to be good it think the overclocking headroom on those new AMDs will be near 0 and overclocked intel will still be better for gaming..

That single thread performance in cinebench may not be that good in gaming.

Various Intel chips have become better value in recent months due to price drops.

The 5000 series may best them for value, but we'll find out soon enough.

This, and no-one has to buy the 5000 series on day1. Wait a little, get it cheaper.

Thanks for everyone's input so far. I'm leaning towards trying to get a 5800x, but I really hope its not like the 3080 launch. That's what's putting me off as I want something this side of Xmas.

The logic is that with my objective being getting an 8+ core CPU all AMD options would cost more. If the 5800x isn't significantly better in gaming then I could get the 10700k right now and spend less.

You can buy the 10 core 10850k for less then a 5800x as well ;) (this is going by Ocuk prices)
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/inte...ocket-lga1200-processor-retail-cp-68q-in.html

10 core/20 threads I9-10850K = £419.99
8 core/16 threads 5800X = £428.99

You're making the itch worse ! :D

And from what I understand the 10850k is essentially a 10900k? They look to perform the same.

The only other thing that bothers me about 10th Gen is lack of PCIE4. Not sure how relevant that will be at least for the next few years.

You no have your 3080 or Cyberpunk yet so i would wait for the AMD 5000 series CPU benchmarks & reviews to come out before blowing loads of cash on buying a new CPU & Motherboard
