Is the cheapest Conroe still likely to be faster than the fastest AMD?

easyrider said:
hmm.

the sense here is to get a faster cpu for less that being the conroe.
but I'm sure you already know that.

Oblivion is significantly faster on my rig than it was playing it on my opty 170 @ 2.8ghz

I am sure it is - but at a conservative estimate you spent £600 or so on the mobo, cpu and RAM to get a 800Mhz increase

Thats a rough guess but it must be in that ballpark

I think you are missing the point here,

Its not about clock speed and gaining 800 mhz over my 2.8ghz opty lol

Its completely different architechture.

At 2.4ghz the conroe is faster than the opty @ 2.8ghz and thats the conroe running 400 mhz slower.

so its not a gain of 800 mhz in real terms is it?

Its a massive jump in performance. If the conroe is faster at 2.4ghz imagine how much quicker it is at 3.6ghz!

The upgrade to conroe cost around 100 quid after I sold my opty, mobo and ram.

£100 for the upgrade after selling your old gear is nothing... id do it ina heartbeat if I could for that money considering the performance you get.

this thread seems almost as comical as the one that got closed, only it has added AMD 'fanboy' arguments aswell  :p

some good info on the conroe tho on the benchmarks, links etc.

I don't understand why some people cannot admit that Conroe is the better choice than Athlons. I switched to AMD in 2001, but now I am going to go to Intel, as without a doubt, in every aspect (price, performance etc) it is the superior choice.

Yes some people need to justify their recent spending, but the logical choice is the Conroe at the moment!

Has anyone even stopped to think lol,

Yeah the Conroe is faster than the current A64 chips, So what

Do you even need a new CPU right now? Is your system that slow?

I'll wait untill next year before I upgrade my system

I MAY upgrade if the X2 4400+ drops to around £100 though

Oh Porche have released a new faster car, It's 10% faster than ferrari' top model, Better get that one then :)

The E6300 is only 125 quid and with a moderate overclock flatten a x 2 4400.

My previous rig was top end FX 62 speeds (ferrari) but I sold that for little loss and now can lap it with my new conroe....lol :D

The arguement holds no water. Its faster thats it and people want top performance.

I enjoy selling at the right time, making little loss on old tech and getting the new for little outlay.

Yeah the cpu Is cheap but the whole upgrade path is pretty expensive(cpu, motherboard, ram, heatsink)

With the memory, If your wanting the best performance/bandwidth from it you have to spend over £300 for 2GB which is just a rip off.

So lets say cpu - £150
Motherboard - £180(only decent one available at the mo is the Asus)
Memory - £300

So that's £680 just to upgrade to Conroe or spend £100(hopefully) on a X2 4400+ and get a speed boost that way, Yeah it's not as fast as Conroe but it's still a boost from what I have(3700+ @ 2.6)

You do not need to spend 300 quid on ram for conroe,Everyone knows that. The G skiLL HZ uses the same chips as the G Skill 8000

The G.Skill 2GB DDR2 NR PC2-6400 will do 800 mhz more than enough for the bandwidth you mention

So lets say cpu - E6300 £125
Motherboard - Asus P5B (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 £130
Memory - G.Skill 2GB DDR2 NR PC2-6400 £135

That will get you a nice overclockable conroe for significantly less
After selling ones old s939 mobo ram and chip conroe is not that expensive after all.

Also AMD will not be reducing the 1mb cache x2's only the 512k ones come conroe's release.

For the time being their not,

Think about it, if they reduced the price on all the chips which one would you go for first the 512k or the 1MB? after the 512k chips sell it will be the 1MB' turn.

Also I notice OCUK seem to be hording the 512k X2' for some reason lol.

I missed the vat off the E6300 bid deal ;)
but the asus P5B Price: £109.95 (£129.19 Including VAT at 17.5%) ;)

so its not expensive as you make out...

you will be waiting for a long time for x2 4400's to drop to the 100 quid mark lmao :D

So...for someone like myself with a Socket A / Barton setup then it's a no-brainer - go for Conroe when it's established (aiming at September-ish). For someone on Skt 939, it's a harder choice as they would need new RAM and mobo, bringing the price of the system up sufficiently to the point that they can get a faster Athlon for less than a faster CPU, mobo, and RAM.

It's just that I don't need a performance boost right now my system is fast enough for everything I throw at it, So getting an even faster system just seems pointless.

Well thats fine for you,

but for me more speed is never missed. And a lot of others.

I do more than game I do a lot of video encoding, editing etc... so anything that can make a system faster is a bonus.

Encoding on my mates opteron 146 @ 3ghz is a drag ! He has seen what my new system can do and guess what?

He's selling it and going conroe!
Don't knock others for wanting more speed...Everyone would like more speed some choose to upgrade others do not.

Your system is slow in my book, its single core and its old tech. But if you are happy with it thats fine, many are not and want more raw power

what's the time difference between your mates system and yours encoding a movie then?

I backed up a DVD in DVD shrink to compare it with my opty 170@ 2.8ghz
In the first pass of DVD analysis I would get around 430 FPS analysis framrate with the 170,

I get well over 1000 FPS with my conroe @ 3.1ghz.
This has risen again at 3.6ghz

So after more tweaking and reaching speeds of 3.8ghz this conroe is gonna be one scary fast frame cruncher in daily encoding tasks!

My mates system gets around 400 off the top off my head
