Is the I7-3930K still a solid chip?

So hold on with my 3930K and Asus Sabertooth x79 board would I get a bottleneck with gpu performance if I went above the 970 I've currently got with a 1070 or 1080 when they get released?

If I could get my hands on a 4930k cheaply, would that work in my current mobo? Would that solve any bottleneck?

You are in the same position I am in, although I don't have a 3.0 card to test it with. From what I have found out it seems that if you have a C1 revision you can in theory get 3.0, but if you have a C2 revision then it shouldn't be a problem. It seems that AMD cards should work without having to do anything and NVidia cards should work with a program they released or a reg edit.

See what revision you have and if its C2 run the program found on this page: http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answ...sion/L3RpbWUvMTM0MDIyMzU2OC9zaWQvaDEzbE45X2s=

Every now and then I get the itch to upgrade my 3930k, checkout the benchmarks and get depressed about how little cpu performance has come on in the last 4 years :-(

Given I run it stable at 4.4ghz there's nothing out there that's a material performance increase for games.

According to CPU-Z I have a revision 1 mobo...

I'm going to start a new thread in general regarding upgrade options for my set up even though its going to be another couple of months before I can do anything

I had a 3930k C0 stepping and it was perfectly capable of pcie gen 3. AMD cards will run at 3 with no problem, but nvidea cards need a specific registry hack I think. IB-E chips don't need the hack for nvidea.

My 3930k is paired up with 4 way SLI GTX 980s in PCI-E 3.0 and runs fine.

The only thing to remember when updating drivers is to run the registry hack which takes about 2 seconds.

So basically if I do make the jump to a 1080 I just need to run a registry hack before installing the updated drivers for the card and everything should be okay with no bottleneck?

I went from a 3930k to a 4960X for not a huge amount of money. There's an upgrade path if you want it.

The main benefits being a bit higher IPC, being able to run 2400+ ram and not having to registry hack for nvidea.

I've a revision 1 board....

He means the cpu stepping, which you can check using cpu-z. It'll be listed on the first tab.

I don't think you'd have a problem, whatever stepping your cpu is as all of them should support pcie 3.0. I've never ran Nvidea on mine though, so never had the problem.

Kaap - which stepping is your 3930k?

worst case scenario, if you have to run it with pcie gen 2, there will be very little difference.

The reason why I am saying revision is because in CPU-Z it is listed next to revision, on mine it says 7 next to stepping.

I got nvme and pci-e 3 on my 3930k, download the nvidia patch, and buy a 950pro, it has it own little bios to get you into Windows.

I've never noticed that before despite using it for years!

Reading up on it, stepping and revision are used interchangeably, but stepping is the term I've usually seen it referred to as on the forums.
