Is The New Rage Patch Released Yet?

Patch is out today and just downloaded it. Looks like a promising set of changes so I loaded it up.

STILL no SLI support, doesn't even detect my CPU saying I don't have a quad core and it also doesn't seem to be able to read 3gb VRAM gcards either so I can't even enable GPU transcoding.

Great patch... wait

What the **** is ID software doing? Theres literally no quality control anymore.

You really need SLI with a 580GTX? I got 60fps solid most the time with a 280....

A single GTX470 from my pair holds 60fps solid at only ~35% GPU useage with the additional tweaks for 8K pages, etc.

EDIT: Wow what did happen to quality control at id :| even tho my PC is perfectly capable of the advanced GPU and CPU options in the new patch its giving messages saying unsupported on trying to select them :|

EDIT2: The detail stage does nothing to hide the blocky pixellated textures either just makes them grainy.

Rage has 60fps cap.:(

New patch does seem to make textures better....looks a lot better to me now but i haven't played it in a while.

I probably use vastly more AA than you, so yeah. Its the only new game from a big game studio NOT to have SLI support in like the last 3 years :|

I can force on 32x TRAA and it still doesn't drop below 60fps ever tho FXAA is more than adequate for the game.

Mines a stutter filled mess and definitely not 60fps. The game is so poorly coded its unreal. I thinks I have insufficient vram for gpu transcoding for christ sake. It thinks my i5 2500k isn't a quad core cpu also.

Hmm, interesting, will try this new patch. See what it does to my game.

Anyone found any release notes for the update that details actually whats been updated? Cant seem to find much info apart from threads on the Rage steam forum.

Its about time ID at least did something to the game, I thought they had pretty much abandoned it!

RAGE v1.02 Patch
New Functionality
------------------------
Texture Detail: Enabling Texture Detail will improve up-close texture quality by performing upsampling with adaptive sharpening. This does not update or increase the resolution of the base textures included with the game but improves the perceived resolution and crispness of textures. This is an intensive operation and is only recommended if you have a quad-core CPU or higher. Please disable this feature if you encounter poor performance, stability issues or are given a notification that the game has run out of memory after loading a map. The Texture Detail option can be found in the Settings -> Video Menu.

Transcode Benchmark: A new benchmark has been added that determines how quickly texture data can be translated from the compressed format on your hard drive to a format that can be used by your video card. The higher your score, the faster your PC is able to make higher detail texture data available. This is not a traditional benchmark that runs through a scene of the game and returns a min/max/average framerate based on hardware and video settings. Other than the GPU Transcode option, the score will not be affected by changing any video settings. The Transcode Benchmark option can be found in the Settings -> Video Menu.

Error Messaging: If you attempt to apply video settings on a system that is not capable of handling them, an error may come up stating that your system ran out of memory. You will be allowed to continue, however, it is recommended that you either reduce your video settings until this message no longer occurs or you will be asked to restart the game with lower video settings. If you ignore this error and continue playing without altering your settings you will likely encounter texture corruption and/or system instability.

Automatic Video Settings Fallbacks: When an advanced video setting fails to apply, the setting may be set back to a safe default. Anti-aliasing will fall back to NONE if the allocation of a multi-sampled FBO fails. Texture Cache will fall back to SMALL when the allocation of a large texture cache fails. Texture Detail will fall back to OFF when large page table allocations fail. On failure, these settings will automatically fall back to safe values without the need for user input.

Patch Changes / Fixes
-----------------------------
- Fixed crash from potentially having stale transcode jobs in flight when switching between texture cache sizes.
- Fixed crash from using SIMD optimized memcpy with a PBO pointer that is not 16-byte aligned.
- Fixed GPU transcode option always turning off when restarting the game.
- Fixed progression in Dead City where player could not advance through sliding door en route to the defibrillator upgrade.
- Fixed CPU feature detection.
- Fixed issues with launching MP by using double quotes around path name.
- Fixed lack of texture detail on parts of the screen at high resolutions due to limited feedback analysis buffer.
- Fixed thread stack space usage and freed up 700 MB of virtual address space.
- Re-enabled UBOs.
- Adjustments to default VDM values for balance.

Most of it seems to have been poorly tested tho with detail textures kicking up an error about my CPU support despite more than meeting requirements and CUDA kicking up an error despite my specs again being more than enough.

Detail textures seem to improve the perception of middle ground quality a fair bit, but do nothing close up other than add a high resolution "grain" to close up textures (its basically a high res "noise" texture repeated over and over) and you can still plainly see the blocky pixels on the actual texture.

This patch is junk

On a single GTX580 @ 1920x1200 it cannot even handle the new option to sharpen textures you have to either disable AA or try a lower res & even then it looks little different someone on Steam forums did a before after & if this took them 4 months to patch/test ID should consider giving up as it looks hopeless either way

Pretty sure the texture sharpen option is run on the CPU so don't know why this would be happening.

It's causing texture pop-in for me but frame rate is still a solid 60fps with all settings including AA maxed out (1920*1200, P2 1055t, GTX570). I've never had problems running the game though.

Low res textures now look grainy instead of smeared, it's an improvement in my opinion but not a dramatic one.

Retail boxed Anarchy version is £10 in a local store and I'm very tempted to grab a copy, yes I know it aint much dosh but is the game at a playable state now ie none of the horrendous texture pop ups that plagued it on release ?

oh and whats the MP like ?

If you have an nVidia card then the game is completely playable with minimal popup (aside from some limited setups), AMD your milage will likely vary.

TBH the game is easily worth £10 despite the low res textures and somewhat poor gameflow, theres a lot of fun stuff to do in the game and some really nice scenery in places, its just as a whole the game suffers a bit.

Not tried the MP personally.

Rage was a game i was looking forward to but "id" really delivered an incredibly underwhelming game. Theyve been coasting on reputation alone since Quake 3, Doom 3 was average at best, and it took almost 8 years to get rage on shelves seeing as they were building the new engine at the same time.

I've not even bothered completing the game, was enjoying it for a bit but it gets tedious pretty fast.:(

From what i read online there was quite a few layoffs at id sometime after rage shipped. With the new Doom game they really have to push the boat out to remain relevant, cookie cutter monster closets and pitch black shadows coupled with weapons with no flashlights isn't going to cut it this time around.

Going to give this a try just shortly and see if I can actually play it yet. For me its been a kick in the crotch since release day (to think I pre-ordered it too).

IF it doesn't work and there is nothing in the pipeline to get it to work I'm going to have to look into a way of obtaining a refund. £30 for something that simply doesn't work is not on.

Had a go with the 'detailed textures', its not very impressive. It basically makes everything look dithered and grainy.

TBH, I'm not sure which I prefer... :(

Yay, thanks for the tips and ideas to get this blasted game running. :)

Steam has just updated Rage and it is now running. :)

The new patch seems to have done the trick, now all I have to do is finish Skyrim and I can have a blast at Rage.
