Is the PC closer graphically compared to "Next Gen" this time round than ever before?

The new consoles seem pretty obsolete already this time around ( more so than normal). I mean the PS4 and XBox One cant even run BF4 at 1080p and get 60fps so they are having to lower the native res and upscale it. The Xbox One BF4 is natively rendered at 720p!

When you think that a decent graphics set up ( single overclocked 290x/780 or 7950 Xfire/670 sli) can get ~100fps at 1080p 4xMSAA all on ultra then there is already quite a gulf.

This is true the Xbone 1 cant play BF4 in true 1080p, it uses dark shadows to reduce rendering resource also. The PS runs 1600x900 or something very close so isn't full HD either. On the plus side the PS4 has twice the pixel fill rate so can run higher quality textures without post processing trickery.

Either way both consoles are behind what we were runnning now in our gaming rigs by a massive margin.

I think both PS4 and Xbox one offer a lot for their money compared to PC's. If I'd go and build a PC for lets say BF4 1080p @60fps, along with mouse, keyboard, OS. I'd be looking at about 700-800€. And the consoles go for half as much.
Progress is always good!

and if you wanted console performance on your pc in bf4 you could drop that by a rather large margin.

consoles offer ease of use/setup and many more exclusive games

You say that, but looking in the console threads a lot of people are buying both consoles, some release games for both, new tvs (720p to 1080p), accessories, PS+ and XB Live. It adds up to a lot more than a decent gaming PC. Plus there is also the fact that consoles dont seem to last very long. My brother has been through 3x 360s while I've had one PC.

Both can be very expensive hobbies.

And almost everyone has a PC or equivalent anyway, so add that as well. 3 machines doing different things for more money, or one machine doing it all, and more, for cheaper?

The question confuses me. Surely it should be the other way around asking whether the "next gen" consoles get near to PC levels of graphics?

There is a significant gap between the consoles and reasonably well specced PC's at the moment. The price difference is probably less than £100, yet the PC can do so much more.

The consoles will be worth buying once they're half the price, have some decent games, and when the developers know how to make those games look good.

Personally I will be waiting till 2015/16 to get a PS4, and not upgrading my PC in the meantime, seeing as with a GTX 670 I'm already far ahead of the consoles. Whats the point in upgrading when i can run most games on pretty high settings at 1440p?

PC is still a long way ahead.

The only problem is we are still not getting the ultra HD textures/shaders as devs/publishers will do the same thing they did on Xbox360/PS3 around launch time hold back the PC version as it makes the console platform holders look stupid if the PC version is superior the only selling point they have is ease of use & living room friendly & that's about it they are effectively selling the emperors new clothes to the masses

I think the step graphics makes with each generation of console helps to attract new gamers to a certain degree, but the reality is, it's gameplay that counts and this is something that's stagnated more than anything else over the last ten years.

Batman Arkham Origins is a prime example. It's essentially AC with a few more graphical bells and whistles. Yet it didn't receive anywhere near the critical acclaim from professional reviewers or gamers. The graphics are better but the gameplay is the same and so as far as I'm concerned, graphics are good enough, so I'd like to see some gameplay innovation father than realistic foot prints in the snow, as nice as they are.

I would prefer to see less graphics and better gameplay/stories. Far less sequels would be good as well, fed up with downloading 10-15gb games just to watch a movie with little interaction. So if xbone and PS4 can't really produce 60fps at 1080p maybe devs will have to settle for better stories/gameplay.

Graphics are part of the experience just like gameplay, storyline, music, etc.

Gameplay wise, all games are pretty much the same as the ones in 2000 or worse/simpler. That's because developers have been hitting this "sweet spot" for the past years in which almost every person that gets his or her hands on a gamepad can play. They don't focus on driving the game experience forward, that's a secondary product, they focus on what sales and that is a quick reward, simpler, wow in your face experience, that all people can enjoy after work.

Don't forget we'll all be buying 4k monitors over the next few years, and consoles will still be stuck at less than 1080p for the next 8/9/10 years

They can't even do that now while we play on multi displays or uber resolutions. They were "history" from the moment the specs hit the market.

Most people are coming straight from a ps3 and 360 and have never gamed on pc's so for most of them the next gens will be a big step up. At the end of the day it comes down to having a great experience. a lot of people used to high end pc's won't enjoy looking at the next gen's because they are constantly thinking the graphics could be better, where as most other people will be having a great time and couldt care about people moaning about the graphics lol

I have just shown a mate the difference between BF4 on a 360, Xbox One and Pc he has never gamed on Pc before and always used consoles.

Next weekend I'm building him a Gaming Pc.... :D

In my experience I think that we cannot tell how muh better pc's are this time around because devs make games for the concoles first. I think at the launch of the 360 this wasn't the case; pc games got a 'proper development'. Consider something like oblivion or Cod 2- Mich nicer on pc graphically compared to the 360. Now compare Watchdogs PS4 to PC and there isn't much difference. This is despite the console hardware being much less relatively powerful, compared to a gaming pc at launch, this time around.

Btw, i use the words like porting and proper development loosely as I have no idea what they technically mean.

Not really, half the rumours still talk about 720/1080 and 30/60fps. They are next gen, 1080 @ 60 fps should be a dead cert. PC's will always be better, but given the cost so they should.

Consoles are great at what they do which is why they will sell a **** load of them.

Consoles are good for kids, they just turn them on and away they go, no faffing around with virus protection or problem games. If my kids were younger they would get one. Thank god they are old enough now to handle PC's.

Not saying consoles = kids, but from a parents point of view they are cheap and easy and that is also a big market.
