Is the PSP going the same way as the Dreamcast?

I was in town earlier today and went to my local Computer Games Store, and noticed that they had only got one small shelving unit dedicated to PSP Hardware, Games and UMD Movies. In contrast they had about three times more space dedicated to the DS and associated games and hardware.

I can see how the DS Lite could be seen as a more desirable handheld than the PSP. Although the PSP has vastly superior capabilities, the DS is more practical, cheaper, has longer battery life, and is less vulnerable to screen damage due to its' clam shell design. Although the initial DS did look a bit lame, I think the DS Lite looks really good.

Are there still going to be future game releases for PSP, or is it going to disappear into obscurity?

Cheers

I don't think it will dissapear as quickly as the DC, but unless some decent original games start getting released it does seem likely to fade away.

I bought Vice City Stories the other day and that's the first PSP game I have bought for at least 6 months.

I'd expect Sony to start pushing the PSP more when the PS3 arrives as it can be linked up with the it.

You missed the most important point. The DS has far superior games.

Btw, edit the competitor! :p

There was an article posted on here the other day which was saying similar. That developers were abandoning the PSP and Sony hasn't put much out with their own internal development team, thus it seems like even Sony can't be bothered with it.

I don't own a current handheld, but If I did, Id buy the DS.

The PSP has sold way more than the DS, but is still losing Sony a shedload of cash. Deservedly so, I'm inclined to say, as the DS is far more innovative and has superior games.

Last I read Sony had shipped 22 million PSP's and Nintendo sold 26 million DS(which includes the DS Lite).

Ofcourse these are Wikipedia figures :p

And about 21 million PSP are most likely sitting under people beds collecting dusk for months...if mine is anything to go by..

Where did you get that info from? Everything I've ever read has said the it's the opposite.

Ah, I got it from Wikipedia, but clearly on a day when someone had doctored the figures, as I've just looked now and the DS is about 4 million ahead.

Not to mention that Nintendo are also selling Gameboys of various kinds.

I guess the patern does fit.

The psp is technically great as was the DC

The psp is victim to rampant piracy as was the DC

The psp comes in white as does the dc ... ? :P

I like the psp, its a super powerful handheld, it can do things I never thought wouldbe possible for some time. Its great for movies etc Its hampered terribly by the complete lack of quality games.

O well at least its nintendo to the rescue.

The thing is, is that things like Need for Speed, Burnout etc that have been released on both PSP and DS have been infinitely better on the PSP. The PSP is soo superior in technical terms to the DS yet appears to be turning into a white elephant.

TBH one of the things which I think makes the DS so attractive, is that in order to play the games on it, yet a lot of the games on the PSP - eg TOCA, Midnight Club, WRC etc all require a great deal of skill and practice to play successfully.

I have to admit, that at the moment I'm playing on my Girlfriend's DS Lite (playing Boggle on it) rather than trying to complete TOCA on my PSP. I think due to tiredness I want a light hearted gaming session without having to concentrate too much, hence playing on the DS.

I never thought th psp would do too well against nintendo in the handheld space and ive been proved right. Sony seem to think that handhelds need amazing graphics, thats obviously not the case. Some of the loading times on the psp are a complete and utter joke, smackdown vs raw 2k6 can take upto 5 minutes or so for loading a single match.

Have a gander at this

Bottom line for me is nintendo have always been untouchable in the handheld space and will continue to be for some years to come, psp pretty much failed to do any real damage to the ds.

I think it all depends on how Sony develope the machine, they could shift a lot more machines if they allowed emulators to run instead of locking them out with a firmwear upgrade, they dont even have to say they're doing it, just stop blocking them, its a bit naughty but not illegal per se.

Also the PS1 emulator could do wonders, especially if they release FF VII and VIII, plus if they finally fish GT out of their backsides.

Use for movies could be more widespread, maybe release a PSP movie site similarly to what MS have done with the 360, i can download any movie i want for £2 or so and have a week to watch it as many times as i like.

The machine has so much potential, but Sony are shooting it in the foot every time.

Have bought both.

Have sold the PSP and then bought a DS Lite and given my DS to my sister.

She has now upgraded to a DS Lite.

The PSP could have been so much better, but Sony messed up massively. UMD ffs! Bad idea.

When was the last Sony had a propriatry format that succeded?

I second this..

It should have been cartridge based like every other handheld..

And why don't sony release a load of the top ps1 games on umd for somewhere round £5 to £10

I imported a PSP from Japan a couple of months after it was released over there(it still was not out in europe  ). Initially i was wowed by its looks and capabilities but the launch games were not great. Lumines was probably the best and most original PSP launch game(also a good one at that too).

After about 2 months i rarely used it, it was sitting their for the 90% of the time doing nothing up until now. I only used it when i went on plane trips etc.

One of the major reasons i bought the PSP was for GT Mobile. I have waited so long that i have decided to give up, sell my psp and lick my wounds:(.
