Is the PSP going the same way as the Dreamcast?

lol the dreamcast was a piece of **** thats why it failed so badly

i really dont see why people think it was so great ?

the psp is an amazing piece of hardware its just ashame the softwares so crap

got sick of waiting for gran turismo for it.

burnout ,ssx, gta and emulators are all ive used mine for :o and not very often either

I guess I’m in the minority as I still think the PSP is a fantastic bit of kit with loads of great titles (although I’m not in a fan boy camp stating any competition, i.e. the DS is carp).

UMDs suck as do their loading times and battery drainage but luckily there is a workaround for that.

If you take a quick look at any of the main review sites such GameSpot or IGN you will see that the PSP has a huge amount of varied titles that score very high.

Even though it’s no longer the case (but maybe true for a while after launch) I do think the PSPs future will be slightly hampered by the constant talk or it having poor titles or PS2 ports which the DS seems to get no flak for with it’s N64 or GBA rewrites.

i've got both ds and psp,at the moment playing more psp games, i've not touched ds in months
just waiting for yoshi and zelda for ds
to me it seems a myth that ds games are better,at the moment we are just selling ds's to little girls who want to buy crappy sims games or disney crap
the so called better games are sitting on the shelf like metroid and mario kart

 you can't have owned one then.

The Dreamcast is one of THE best ever consoles. 99% of owners will tell you that, even though it died an early death.
Why is that? Why would owners praise a machine that gave them only a few years of new titles? Oh, that's because in those few years it produced some of the all time classic console games.

To quote someone or some article:
"The Dreamcast didn't fail us, WE failed the Dreamcast!"
I thought it was pretty fitting. If more people had bought on console merit, rather than on hype then the DC would have sold by the bucket load.
It failed because people waited for the PS2, not because it was a bad machine or had bad games. It sold extremely well in the first year, till the Sony hype machine got rolling.

Anyhow, the PSP os a very flexible machine but the games are just poor. It offers the best hand held ports for multi-platform games but who cares. If people want NFS then they can buy it for their PS2 or 360 or GC. Hand held gamins is an entirely different beast. I bet the most played games in anyone's PSP or DS collections are those that were designed for hand held gaming.

I language love my PSP because it's such a good replacement for my hijacked PS2. It's private hardcore gaming heaven. Franky, I'm fed up with the DS, there doesn't seem to be any great games for it anymore, just a load of minigames. :(

I have both PSP and a DS and owned a DC. The DC was great fun at the time. Loads of good games, the best GFX before the PS2 came out and I've got great memories of my DC. Shame it didn't sell as well as it should have.

As for which is better the PSP or the DS? Hmmmm hard one, the PSP is by far technically more superior, but the DS does have some crackers. Which is why I own both. The cruncher if I had to loose one of them, it would probably be the DS cos it is weaker in the gfx. But cos I don't need to loose one, I'll happily keep both of them cos they are both very good.

To think the PSP is a failure, is to walk blind.

The PSP has already pretty much died, Sony need to let go..

Unfortunately I can see the PS3 following suit, might be the end for Sony in the console market in the next couple of years?

Bad marketing will do it :(

Shame

The Dreamcast was designed to undo the damage Sony caused releasing thier PSX which killed the Sega Saturn. Personally I don't think much of the PSP, I doubt it's going to do anygood unless the PS3 can make good use of it.

I love my psp.I have been playing it nonstop since August. OK the games arent revolutionary but I dont care, I want a handheld console to have decent graphics(altho gameplay is important too).I admit tho, my PSP had been gathering dust for about 8 months until I played some japanese games (initial d,naruto, bleach) which made me addicted and starting to play my PSP more.

I heard so many good things about the DS,my sister just got one for her birthday, I had a go at it and I didnt think it was that great.

PSP = Crap, Dreamcast = Fantastic. no comparison

I totally agree.

The Dreamcast should have sold like the DS. If Nintendo and Sega merged we would get the best console and best games!

what is a PSP?

:p

but the dreamcast was pretty good back then, wasted so many hours on it, plus wasted so many hours gaining arthritis from the bizzarly shaped controller

Sorry, I can't actually read the rest of this thread without (drunkenly) commenting on this post.
Have you ever touched a Dreamcast? At the time they were awesome and even now they still have some class games. Ferrari 355 anyone? How about Ikaruga?
Want to know why people thought the Dreamcast was great? It's simple, it was (and still is) great. Unfortunately Sony's whoreish marketing, Sega's ultimately poor marketing and rampant piracy stood in the way, sigh.
To call the Dreamcast "a piece of ****" is just one of the most wrong things I have read in the Console part of this forum.

The PSP was great for a while, however, as everyone else seems to agree, it became stupidly boring. How many people bought it just for GT? I was one of those fools, I fely ultimately stupid trying to justify using my PSP as a 1gb memory stick whilst waiting for a game that would never be released...
I guess it's another story of Sony being late for it's own party, it has however managed to make me hate them... All they had to do was put a little effort in to one of their own consoles, it proved a bit too much though... As much as we need the competition, the idea of Sony falling flat on their face and failing still makes me feel happy.

[edit] Also, anyone who has played multiplayed Speed Devils will vouch for the DC awesomness![/edit]

I've just been having a look on the DS Games list on Gamespot, and TBH the games that are out for the PSP are much more to my taste.

I used to own a PS2, which I sold for an Xbox. I have regretted this decision ever since.

To me, the PSP is almost a direct replacement for my PS2. If like me, you are into racing games, or realistic graphics, the PSP is the only console to buy.

Have both PSP and DS...play them both pretty much equally now, though the DS had its spell because it was new and ive had the PSP for about a year

PSPs are easily better than the DS for driving and football games, no shaddow of a doubt

DS is better for platform and RPG games

ATM i am playing GTA and burnout on my PSP and pretty much the 2 mario platformers and advance wars on the DS

My PSP has seen better days, the wireless switch is broke and the L shoulde rbutton is a bit tempremental...also dropped it again the otehr day and its got a nice chuck out of the side of it...i got if free with a phone contract which is up soon and am actually looking to replace my PSP, as i would if my DS broke

I very nearly sold my PSP, sold all but one of my games and was really ready for letting it go but something stopped me and im glad it did :p

HOPEFULLY with the new firmware that has come out allowing PS1 games to be played that will help boost its popularity back up as long as sony realise people wont just buy a PS3 to do so

I bought the PSP giga pack last year (begining of Dec) for smackdown and gta liberty city stories. The battery life didn't always last my daily commute. (on a bad day lasted up to 6 hours)

1) The loading times in smackdown were a joke.

2) Liberty CS was great but too short.

3) Ghosting on the screen was imo unacceptable and in games like king king was a joke.

The psp in my opinion was all flash and no substance. The DS kept me interested for way longer. Advance wars, Mario 64 and Castlevania DOS were superb.

The dreamcast was an awsome console, I proudly owned one :)

Common sense :D

IMO the reason the PSP has affectively failed is Sony forgot that the majority of consumers brought the PSP as a games console, but have realised that although it does various other things (play movies/music) it's not particularly good as a games console :-/

At the moment it looks like Sony have followed the same blueprint with the PS3, and have forgotten that a lot of the PS2 owners were families/children who wanted a cheap console with great games. By the time the PS3 hits the market with any real impact most of this market will have gone over to the Wii, and the gamers will have more than likely given up waiting (360).

It's sad but I think Sony believes that it's bigger and better than it actually is :(
