Is The Secret World worth £8 on Steam

Can't you port out to Agartha?

I'm on "to catch a thief. Kill the traitor" and cannot kill the three men in Shamballa because I stumbled in with not quite enough ability points. Thing is it won't let me return to my other quests until this is completed :(

Edit: I just found an Agartha conduit in my inventory that will get me out which you can only use every 30 mins.

Just seen this myself and it's raised an eyebrow, I love reading about conspiracies and secret societies so it's got my attention.

I've never played a MMO before so I'm coming to it fresh. Is it something that you can play single player or do you need to get into groups? I don't have a lot of free time so crafting friendships etc., with people isn't really going to work out, I'd like something that I can dip into and out of.

The Mrs plays a lot and we co-op together with what we can, (we blazed through Saints Row 3 and 4 together), is this a game that can be played just co-op?

Also once you've paid for the game is that it? Or are there loads of micro transactions that just spoil things (at least for me)?

*edit* I've just seen the "Massive edition" with extra DLC and weapons, is that something that completes the game or can it be ignored? If both the Mrs and myself bought it that would be a £50 investment which we probably can't justify with the amount of free time we have.

Thanks. :)

Playing this I found I had no free time. I also found I didn't want to buy any other games for at least 9 months so fifty quid over this period is nothing.

Don't treat The Secret World as an MMO. There's no need to party with anyone ever to complete the storyline, only to do the (optional) instances, so you can play it as you would something like Skyrim. Three playthroughs, one for each faction (do Illuminati, then Templar, then Dragon) and you'll have got your money's worth.

I'm coming across a few things that I find frustrating with it, especially as a solo player (most of all npc density), but its a challenge and that's something that I want from a game, so I guess I shouldn't complain.

taking my time with things, still trying to work out what is what.

Yeah actually, the mob density drives me spare at times, especially as the combat can be a bit slow. It means I tend to play the game for a bit and then leave it for weeks at a time. The wonders of a decent F2P model :)

I've played this on and off for a couple of years but I have no idea how to play the game still or work out the character the builds (i just kinda pick stuff that looks nice and it doesnt work) and stats and tutorials evade me totally. That and it runs under 60fps at all times on dual 780s and an i7 on top settings. I had a much easier time learning and getting into Eve online.

Basically if you were awesome at wow or rift or lotro or aion or tera you will suck at this as it's a whole another type of stat based build based confusion. Fair warning K?

soloing in a nutshell:
you basically need 1 weapon builder - an ability that builds resources - (make sure it builds resources for both weapons you have equiped - with the exception of assault rifle leach abilitys which is great for survival but rather slow), and 2 weapon consumers - 1 for each weapon, (again the only time you might be able to get away with only 1 weapon is assault rifle) a consumer is an ability that uses resources and does an amount of damage depending on how many resources you have, so use your builder to bulid 5 resources for each weapon (they build at the same time every time you hit said foe with builder ability) then 2 consumers to do a massive amount of damage to your foe. the rest of your abilitys need to be buffs and heals - maybe an aoe (area of effect) consumer when you get overrun! maybe an ooe builder as well. As for gear try to have a mix of dps, hp and heal gear -

For group play and dungeons you need to specialize your gear and abilitys more for what you want to do - tank, healer or dps - usual mmo roles, switch between builds with the deck manager. (the deck manager is a bit buggy so when you make a build i suggest you "update" it several times to make it stick!)
For example on dps you want all dps gear, no heals, only an hp piece or two for certain fights, and concentrate your stats on penetration and hit rating, and obviously no healing abilitys just all out dps, maybe a few buffs to enhance group dps.

things i wished i knew earlier - weapon passives can be used for all weapons no matter what wepon you have equipped. a good one to get early for soloing is the fist passive lick your wounds - but you dont need a fist weapon to equip it. you can search for any ability by clicking on the right hand side of the ability wheel window.

Also stay away from the pre built decks, they are rubbish - only useful when you have nothing else useful to unlock and want the clothes you get as a reward for unlocking!

It's worth £8 just to play through the first area Kingsmouth. The story's good and the atmosphere in that zone is better than any other MMO I've played.

Plus, after you get through the areas you've paid for with buying the game, they have quite a bit of content available as 'issues' you buy from their store, and aren't that expensive. They work on new content regularly too.
